I find "Ogelthorpe" for "Kafka" rather impressive under the "just plain wrong" category on the first page. If Andrew had been on my team I'd have been pretty mad at him.

Yeah, I'm sure there are multiple people who founded a penal colony. I'm impressed that someone could come up with Kafka from that clue.

I'm fairly certain now that the verb was "created," and Dr. B. had started to say the word "cruel." The verb was what narrowed it down to fiction.

Yeah, it'd have to be "created." Although, I don't know if I would've taken a shot there.

Not a bad neg, until you know that this was after they were described as being roughly the size of large turkeys.

Kafka created a fictional penal colony in "In the Penal Colony." I guess I don't see how that's a hose?

The verb "created" is what eliminates the hose. At the time of that post I was unsure of the verb.

The verb "created" is what eliminates the hose.
Does the connotation of the word "created" really limit the answer to solely fictional locations? Unless the question had more in it, it could be reasonably argued that Oglethorpe "created" the penal colony of Georgia.

In this case, I think "founded" would be a more accurate term to use.

Honestly, it's just a bad question. I don't know why the question writer had to make people play the is-this-a-historical-person-or-is-he-talking-about-"In the Penal Colony" game by not mentioning the actual title (or better, by beginning with plot clues before mentioning the penal colony).

Well, also, like, I'd hazard a guess that there was another clue beforehand that made it unique to Kafka (which would reduce the "it's a bad question" complaint by a lot, since anyone who knows a good amount about Kafka should probably recognize that he wrote "In the Penal Colony"). And even if not, it's probably a good idea not to buzz until you hear a better clue.

I was under the impression that was the first clue. If it was, I'd definitely wait for the title or the mention of the torture device. If it wasn't, then Charlie's right.

Many people create penal colonies. . . the phrase "he created a penal colony" as a clue asking about Kafka's "In the Penal Colony" is stupid. However, it's not as stupid as this horrible discussion. . . please no more analysis of clues about penal colonies.

This was extra hilarious because the clue about two people having a horribly bloody decapitation tossup and other various brutal stuff had just been read, and from what I hear the answer was given with great enthusiasm.

I guarantee that I moderated in the match where (a certain painter) was given for (a certain non-painter) at state champs this year. The dude not only power vulched it, but he beat his teammate who actually knew the answer. In conclusion, that part of the post needs to be deleted too. So does TicoTime get another week for another uncleared answer, or is it just a one week ban for the entire post? The rules aren't completely clear on this.
