The Beatles

Post by Warbourne »

No music topics active? :(

That makes me sad. So, anyone like the Beatles, both the band and their songs?
I'm a big fan, hence the Lennon avatar and signature, and a big pool of knowledge on anything about their songs.

I actually know people who love the songs but hate the band. I think the two are mutually exclusive.

Haha, good to know.

To be fair, the guy hated classic rock, and by that logic he hated the Beatles too, but he likes a couple of their songs, presumably the ones that have a lot of drumming.

Ringo Starr being one of the worst (and luckiest) drummers in the history of time, I fail to see why he likes said songs.

McCartney was (is?) a competent drummer, so it's possible that he laid those tracks out. However, other than a few select songs (Don't Pass Me By comes to mind), drums were never an overly featured portion of Beatles songs.

I didn't like the Beatles until I was 16 or so. The song that turned me around: "Rocky Raccoon."

See, I'mma have to disagree with you on that'un. Sgt. Pepper's is, in my humble opinion, better than Revolver, mainly because of its influence if not for its music. Its one of the first concept albums, and although it isn't the first, its certainly got alot of say in what a concept album should be.

And because of the coverability (Is that a word? Yes! Madness? This is Liechtenstein!) of its songs. I mean, if a song can be played by both the Beatles and Joe Cocker and the Shelter People, its gotta be good.

But yeah, the Beatles are probably the most influential musical entity since Mozart. And maybe they surpass him.

The White Album is better than Revolver. So are Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road. Revolver was definitely a turning point (Rubber Soul still had quite a few mediocre songs) but was really just the beginning.

If you want to pick an album that influenced the way most music sounds right now, you'd probably pick something that Phil Spector produced to death, or perhaps an early Pearl Jam record. Nobody sounds like the Beatles, and the people who try to come off as insufferable (hey there Oasis!) The only group that really pulled it off was the Smithereens, and that's like 20 years ago by now.

Pearl Jam's Ten is pretty much a perfect source for the carbon copying for virtually all current mainstream rock music (though, really, maybe Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory would be a better comparison, like it or not).

I can honestly say that I don't dislike the Beatles, but that I'm not much of a fan. Their music is good, but it's not stuff that appeals to me enough to listen to on a regular basis. There are some good songs - "Dear Prudence" comes to mind - but while I agree that nobody sounds like the Beatles, I don't get all the hype.

I watched "Across the Universe", and now I don't think I need to listen to any Beatles songs for the next 5 years.

QFT

Seriously though, that album is pure mastery of pop music from top to bottom, mixing stupidly clever protest, weird storytelling, and the first real notice of LSD gone bad in their music. Peppers may be more influential, but Revolver shoots it in the heart.

That said, unfortunately almost every band in rock music nowadays goes off of three records or exact derivatives thereof:

1. Nirvana's Nevermind
2. Green Day's Dookie
3. Rage Against the Machine

With all of those albums, you have excellent songs that have been unnecessarily beatified. As you take each of those albums and water them down further, they begin to suck. The derivative stuff worsens faster, but even those albums show their wear.

This is a good point as to why the Beatles annoy some people. Fawning stuff like the endless parade of documentaries, books, movies, and movies in which minor actors sing songs that you have already heard 50 times, is totally unnecessary. It smacks less of an appreciation for the Beatles' music and more of a self-absorbed "all important things in the history of the human race happened between 1964 and 1971" attitude that certain Baby Boomers would do well to get over. Much like certain political and religious figures, the Beatles are great, but their most devoted fans are scary.

The movie itself was well-produced, and the two girls I was watching it with were both Beatles fans, so they loved it. I...enjoyed the music, enjoyed seeing Bono, and am unsure as to whether or not I want those two hours back.

It really couldn't have been much more trippy.

I really like The Beatles. I mean, it's kind of uncool if you seriously dislike them. Their influence on rock and roll is impossible to ignore, and even by modern standards their catalog of music is extremely impressive. My favorite Beatles songs are While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Here Comes the Sun, and as a consequence my favorite Beatle was George Harrison.
