ANNOUNCEMENT: Experimental Tournament, 5/24

Post by magin »

I'd like to announce the William Gaddis Experiment: This Tournament is About Learning, an experimental event to be held Saturday evening on May 24th at the HSNCT. It will feature at least ten rounds of 20 tossups, with powers and superpowers given for early buzzes. The cost for this tournament is zero dollars; it is free and open to all. It will be more difficult than ACF Nationals 2007, but less difficult than Ryan Westbrook's doubles. The ensemble cast writing this avant-garde tournament includes myself, Gautam Kandlikar, Ahmad Ragab, Dennis Jang, Shantanu Jha, Mike Bentley, and Charles Meigs.

For teams, I'm currently not sure if there will be a draft or if players will form their own teams; I think if 24 or fewer people, approximately, sign up, there will be a draft, but if we have more, players can form their own teams. I'm leaning towards high schoolers being able to play on teams of four, due to the difficulty of the questions. If people have any questions or concerns, they can post them here or email them to me (my email address is jmagin AT umd DOT edu). If people want to sign up, they can do that here as well (or send a message to the aforementioned email address); similarly, if anyone wants to join the growing stable of writers for this tournament, send me an email as well. I look forward to seeing you all there.

If anybody wants to be my teammate, please feel free to e-mail me. I hope to superpower anything about medicine. I plan to moderate/score NAQT HSNCT during that Saturday morning/afternoon, so I will be in the hotel already. Since I live in Chicago, I shall still have enough time to sleep before that Sunday's reunified Indianapolis 500 now that Indy Car has absorbed Champ Car.

I will be at the HSNCT and would love a draft, because otherwise me (playing with my multiple personality) would probably get totally owned on things not Nathan Bedford Forrest, books I've read, a little myth, and science.

But one way or another, I'll play this!

Depending on my team's plans that evening, I'd probably be available to staff. I'd get murdered at it and don't even want to try, but I'd love to scorekeep.

EDIT: Apparently we have funn plans, then will kick out the computerized jams afterward. Oh well.

So, my tentative plan is to have people sign up for this tournament, divide the number of players by four, rank the top n/4 players by some metric, and have them draft the rest of the players so that there are the maximum number of four player teams. Therefore, if you want to play, it would be really helpful if you sign up (either by posting here or emailing me). Note that the tournament is free. I plan on starting on Saturday night after the playoff announcement, so the start time should be from 6-6:30. Also, if people want to moderate/bring laptops (since I want to run this paperless), please let me know. High schoolers will also be drafted, unless they really want to play on all-high school teams, I suppose.

Signed up so far:

- Rob Carson
- Rom Masrour
- Evan Nagler

In addition to playing, I can bring my CPS laptop, so I am confirming my previously accepted entry. Any contributions of the packets being installed would be most welcome. As for the draft, it sounds too much like modular arithmetic, so you lost me. I just hope that I will not be picked last, as in high school gym. Then again, I never earned less than a "B" in physical education, for I always dressed for gym daily.
