A buzzer game vaguely resembling quiz bowl will be played. The team with the best math player will win, unless another team is better at the crucial coloring portion of the distribution.

Dorman will be approximately one hundred times better at quizbowl than any other team present, but will not win since quizbowl will not occur.

Oh, is State College going too?
Make that TWO teams who are very good at quizbowl and will lose to someone who can do math quickly.

Interesting that you think math makes the difference. This same format is used for our state championship, and I have seen Suwannee win several championships without EVER answering a math question. Hardee has won four times and I can asssure you we are not a math team.

Re: 2008 Panasonic Academic Challenge updates
Somebody described the Illinois team as "an absolutely vicious team" in a previous post. And I think they meant that as the ultimate quizbowl compliment.
The number of questions in the PAC format are supposed to be balanced. The problem is that so many science questions are so "math-y", It seems heavily weighted toward math.

Okay folks, here's the actual distribution (all numbers are out of 65 questions):
Math: 12
Science: 12
Social Studies: 12
English: 12
Multi-Subject: 4
Music: 3
Art: 3
Humanities: 3
Foreign Language: 3
Technology: 1
Except for the Multi-Subject and Technology, which are only in the 15-point round, everything else is balanced across the 3 rounds of the game. As for the worksheets, well, they're a little of everything.

I've noticed that there's generally an inverse relationship between whether a tournament thinks "social studies" is a quizbowl category and how good the tournament is.

Considering Art, Music, Language, Foreign Language, and Social Studies (which, I assume, includes History), I'm wondering why that category can't just be renamed RMP and Literature, assuming that their English doesn't include Literature.everyday847 wrote:I nominate "Humanities" as the least specific category.Matt Weiner wrote:I've noticed that there's generally an inverse relationship between whether a tournament thinks "social studies" is a quizbowl category and how good the tournament is.

Practice games were fun since teams were mixed up, and my team featuring Dave Bykowski, Eric Huff, and the coach from team Louisiana whose name slips my mind won the coaches' challenge and were rewarded with ipod player stereos... I had a good time. Now comes sitting through 80 minutes of ugh tomorrow.

Re: 2008 Panasonic Academic Challenge updates
I've been told the practice questions are worse than the actual competition. To be honest they sounded like they were from 1979. People in practice rounds buzzed way earlier than is possible. Like after the first part of a two part question and guessing the second part (sometimes successfully).
Probably the worst thing about this tournament: Almost all of their question formats are built to be buzzer beaters. Matching especially. There are some legit people here, but I think some states choose a team based on "Anyone want to go to Disney World?"
One gem (from practice, not competition):
"In this Edward Albee play..."*buzz*
Random kid: "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"
Panasonic reader : "that's right, amazing" (or something to that effect)
Everyone legit in the room "are you kidding me?"
We'll have to see how tomorrow goes.
Does anyone who's here want to play some normal quizbowl scrimmages? Maybe on the many rounds where we have byes? (though probably most people want to go to disneyworld?) I'm sure there's some packets that nobody here has heard. Just an idea.

Yeah, that was fun. Matt Knupp's antics were amusing as well.

No, Joe submitted it as a joke and put Dan's name on it. We might have Dan go up later and ask if he can have his picture back, just to gauge their reaction when they realize their artist of the day is 17 and headed to Princeton in 3 months.

[sarcasm] I sorely miss being at a Disney-related them park this year. [/sarcasm]
Last year, we won, and I'm trying to keep an even keel because I don't want to come across as a poor winner who shoves it in people's faces ... and all I got for my efforts were lectures from some of the people in charge to "smile more".
Telling me how to feel and express myself .... not a way to get me to smile.
