The Maryland packet at ACF Nationals produced two quality negs.

One question indicated fairly early in the tossup that the answer was one of the four cardinal directions (the answer ended up being east). This did not prevent Dartmouth with negging with "backward".

This was followed several questions later where, near the end of the question, a tossup mentioned that the leader of the Heaven's Gate cult had claimed to be a certain historical figure, upon which Brendan negged with "Mahdi". The answer was "Jesus".

Billy Beyer negged this one with "Thebes". After "this direction" had been said.

Not really, but 'God' is probably a bad answer either way.

A good example of why listening to the whole question is important, from PACE NSC '03 or '04 (so not a "neg," but it did cause hilarity to ensue):
Given: Cervix
Correct: Iris

I must say in my own defense that all I heard of the question was "in utero" (which in retrospect should have told me I was wrong, but at the time made sense) and "muscles involved in dilation."

It was definitely late enough in the question for this to be super-tarded.

Is this supposed to be "Moderators" or "Moderates"? I guess it could go either way, because there are plenty of us quizbowl moderators that do live in Eastern Ohio (Cleveland, Youngstown, Canton)

Oh, sorry, bit of a typo. It's:

moderator: and they overwhelmingly voted for Bush in 2000

it's the moderator continuing to read the question after the trainwreck of a neg

Let's not talk about ACE Camp questions yet, as many people reading this board will attending Milligan/MSM later in the summer and I would guess that they use the same questions.

This is technically not a neg,but it is still bad. This was given by a benchwarmer on my old frosh/soph team.

Correct Answer: Hors d'oeuvres
Given Answer: (Whores-Dee-Oov-rays) Phonetic Pronounciation

This was surprisingly ruled correct

It's not surprising since in quizbowl you should always accept pronunciations of something that is how a non-native speaker would reasonably look at it and think it's said, as long as there aren't wrong consonants or extra vowels.

A question on hors d'oeuvres is like a question on poem.
A bonus on Greek foods is like an Iliad/Hymn to Aphrodite/Theogony bonus.

If I remember correctly, this "awesome" neg that the poster earned a tempban for can now be revealed. It comes from question 20 (I'm positive it's question 20) of round 6 (I'm not sure, but it's either 6 or 7), of whatever IS set was used for state champs tournaments (76?):

Given answer: Grandma Moses
Correct: Rachael Ray

Also, I was listening to some of the Titanomachy podcasts, I'm not sure how great a neg this is, but I thought it was bad at the time:

Given: Defenestration of Prague
Correct: Canossa

It sounded like whoever buzzed (Chris Ray?) had ruled out whatever he was initially buzzing in with, and came up with something, but still, this was well after "chosen because it was on the way to Augsburg" and "belonged to...Mathilda of Tuscany".

This was already mentioned in the ASS II thread of the trash forum, but I think it bears repeating now that the podcast is up. From the Unusual Deaths packet (Round 7):

Correct: the alien bursting out of John Hurt's chest
Feldman: Naked Girl Avalanche

Also, check this round for a pretty awesome power on tossup 19.
