Bad Negs Again
Bad Negs Again
Starting a new thread for the 08-09 season, plus so these rules can be as visible as possible:
1. When posting a "bad neg", make sure it is from a set that has been cleared for discussion. If it's an NAQT set, it's not clear until after that year's HSNCT. If it's a house written event, make sure all of its mirrors have been conducted (as applicable).
2. When posting a "bad neg", you must identify which set or event it is from.
3. If you fail to follow rule one and post a question not yet cleared for discussion, you will be subject to a week-long tempban.
4. If you fail to follow rule one by posting a question not yet cleared for discussion and rule two by not identifying which set or event the question is from, you will be subject to Mike Sorice's unholy rage. He's a loose cannon. We can't control him.

Re: Bad Negs Again
Proposed criteria for a true bad neg (must meet one or more:)
1) wrong type of answer (person, place, thing)
i.e. Denmark for pancreas (great neg, by the way)
2) one of a group, you name something not in the group
i.e. Grouchy the dwarf; name this South American country-BUZZ-Spain
3) confusing two similar-sounding but very different answers
i.e. Scrooge being visited by the ghost of Bob Marley; President George Washington Carver
4) just plain wrong (especially applicable when pop culture is involved)
i.e. Arthur Dent for Buzz Lightyear; Golda Meier for the Baroness
5) given answer in question
i.e. name this work by the author of White Fang, Jack London-BUZZ-White Fang
6) correct answer is gettable by average 6-year-old
i.e. Saturn, the third planet from the sun; Marlowe, the author of Hamlet

Arguing about what makes a bad neg is a waste of time that I could spend wasting my time on something more valuable, like Resident Evil 4, playing cornhole or rapidly pushing buttons on trunks of cars..

Ted Gioia and I managed to create a virtual side competition of really bad negs on Saturday. I believe I buzzed in with the Battle of Manzikert after the question suggested it was something that happened in a BC year, while Ted buzzed in thinking that someone in the famished road had wrestled a bear. In Nigeria.

Throughout the CO History/Main Event, I didn't get enough buzzes to have bad negs.
However, in the Trash tournament, I went wild with negs, Including this one.
Given: Brett Favre
Correct: BB King
This came after it should have been clear that they were looking for a musician...

That was the tossup on inoculations. Considering the fact that you buzzed in after 11 words, it made the remaining clues rather hilarious. In fact the question went something like this:Deesy Does It wrote:There was a tossup at history doubles, I don't remember what it was on, but I buzzed in really early and thought it was blowjobs when it definitely wasn't.
According to Chinese tradition this practice, sometimes called "planting the flowers," became popular
after a Tibetan nun suggested it to Wang Tan. In 1706 an African slave named Onesimus said it was a
common practice among the Guramantese and told his master, Cotton Mather, about it. Emanuelle Timoni
told the Royal Society about this practice in a 1716 letter from the Ottoman Empire, where it is first
recorded as being performed on Circassian slave girls, perhaps contributing to their reputation for beauty.
The Scotsman William Douglass opposed this practice in colonial Boston, and Lady Montagu promoted it
among the European nobility. In 1777, George Washington ordered all of his troops to undergo this
procedure in the wake of an epidemic of the disease it prevents. For ten points, name this procedure that
gives a patient a mild form of live smallpox usually via an incision, not to be confused with vaccination.

This made the rest of the question highly amusing, as homosexuality continued to vaguely make sense until about halfway through.

Yes, Pynchon was the clue there. Afterward, a group in the hall contemplated both strip-Russian-roulette and strip-Botticelli, and I think all involved decided that the former would actually be preferable in/around quiz bowl precisely because one would likely die before having to see other qb'ers naked.everyday847 wrote: Wait, there's strip Botticelli?

I mean, the last post was a month ago, and I didn't want such a quality thread to go to the Archives before it really got started.cornfused wrote:Who cares if it's a necro (it's not, anyway,) that's a quality neg. Have you asked Jason where the heck that came from?
Anyway, the story I kinda heard firsthand and kinda heard secondhand was that he reflex buzzed off Ravel, only he thought he heard Stendahl.

Oh, good point.
VCU Open:
Tossup gives heavy implications that this has to do with war service. Tossup gives heavy implications that guys are in it and that it has nothing to do with descent, but somehow i miss those implications. Because I buzz with the DAR. Sorry, Order of Cincinnatus. You don't get any love.

What is the Order of Cincinnatus? the google results I get are for the Society of the Cincinnati, which involves descent and and has nothing to do with actual servic.

Re: Bad Negs Again
William Heath, a critic of this organization, joined it solely to show that he was eligible and then publicly quit, and Michaelis, a British agent, infiltrated it and claimed to hear its members plotting to overthrow the government. Opposition to it picked up when it was accused of being a conspiracy to subvert democracy in the pamphlet Considerations by South Carolina Congressman Aedanus Burke, who won the support of Elbridge Gerry and John Adams. Pierre L'Enfant designed a medal and diploma for this group before organizing a French branch of this group, which had turned into an intermittently active charitable organization by 1835 due to its overly strict membership rules. For 10 points, name this group open only to the eldest male descendants of Revolutionary War veterans, first led by George Washington and named for a Roman dictator who laid down his power, in turn lending its name to a city of southern Ohio.

Not only nine words in, I don't even manage to remember the correct answer! Hooray. It's a shame, too, because it was a great tossup.cornfused wrote:So actually, nine words in, that's an amazing neg, Andy.Matt Weiner wrote:William Heath, a critic of this organization, joined it
