William R. King Memorial 8/30/08: Dorman wins

Post by acmagee »

The University of Alabama is proud to announce its second annual 2007 William Rufus King Memorial Tournament for high-schools. The tournament will be using NAQT questions. It shall take place on August 30th, 2008, in Tuscaloosa, AL, at the University of Alabama.

Please email me at [email protected] if your school is interested in attending. All of the details, in terms of driving directions and buildings, shall be sent out at a later time. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing all of Alabama's, and hopefully other state's, high-schools here at the Capstone.

If you haven't recieved an invitation, here's the content.
Dear School:
The Alabama Academic Quizbowl Team is pleased to announce its second annual William Rufus King Memorial Tournament, to be held on Saturday, August 30th, 2008, at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

The Alabama Academic Quizbowl Team is hosting the William Rufus King Memorial Tournament again after its success last year. This tournament will provide an opportunity for students to visit the premier college in the state of Alabama. Also, the tournament presents an opportunity to raise awareness of a Quizbowl organization at the Capstone, which might interest students wishing to pursue scholars’ bowl on the collegiate level.

Not only will students be afforded the chance of visiting the beautiful campus at the University of Alabama, but they will also get to meet students from other high-schools/junior high-schools; and more importantly, they will get to compete in an academic scholars’ bowl competition.

This tournament is designed for players in high-school (grades 9-12) but we would welcome middle and junior high-school players as well. Providing that there are enough teams composed entirely of students in those respective divisions, we would offer separate divisional play, and awards exclusively for those students.

This tournament will feature questions provided by National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT). Also, teams that finish in the top 15% of the total field automatically qualify for the NAQT High-School National Championship to be held in 2009.

Coach and player meetings for the William Rufus King Memorial Tournament will be held in one of the newest buildings Alabama has to offer, Alston Hall. Match play will be held in the equally modern Bidgood Hall. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the player/coach meeting starting at 9:30, and match play starting at 10:00, with the tournament concluding around 5:00 p.m.

Interested schools should return a letter to us expressing their interest in attending, or e-mail us at [email protected].
The entry fee for every team entered in the tournament is $80, and $60 for any subsequent teams entered from the same school.
Also, it is important to note that schools that attend are REQUIRED to bring at least ONE buzzer set with them, as we have very few buzzer systems in our possession. If you have a problem with bringing a buzzer set, please contact us and we can try to make other arrangements.

We look forward to seeing all of you in August. May everyone have a safe and fun summer, and be ready to have some serious fun starting in the fall!

P.S.: Confirmations for tournament attendance (with amount of teams indicated) MUST be received by August 11th, 2008, with a discount of $10 per team entered if we receive your confirmation by July 14th, 2008. Again, if you have questions or concerns, please contact us and we will do our best to help you.

Turns out CHS WILL be attending this tournament with 4 of its top 6 players, albeit without their coach and under a different team name...It's a long story and I will not bore anyone with the details.

Good luck to everyone next weekend; I will be screaming my head off as the #1 team in the nation, the UGA Bulldawgs, take the field for the first time this season!

I don't have a field right in front of me, but I don't think we've had any new teams sign up, so here they are:

Russellville
American Christian Academy
"Chattahoochee"
Dorman (3)
Brookwood (2)
J. M. Tate
Hoover (2)
Brindlee Mountain (3)

Last I heard, we had 19 teams signed up, so that list is somewhat incomplete.

It actually might help our tournament structure if you only bring 2 teams. That way, we can have three pools of 6 and not have one pool playing another round.

After eight prelim games, I've heard reports that Dorman B has played Hoover 3 times. WHY? Who didn't do their job with scheduling for this tournament?

Part of it may have to do with the fact that ACA left after a few rounds.

They were good when we played them last year at Scottsboro. I thought most of them had graduated however.

I believe they only lost one of their A team members last year. Mudkip (Chattahoochee) definitely played Dorman the closest in the finals (320-280 going into tossup 20) and I thought they should've taken second.

The scheduling debacle happened due to a lot of teams either registering their teams incorrectly, bringing more teams than they said they were bringing, or just leaving in the middle of the prelims. I sincerely apologize to all of the teams who attended, but we figured they'd rather play teams twice than have 3-4 byes.

The second bracket was weird, though, because my team was 5th after the prelims, but they pulled us out of the 2nd bracket and put us in the JV bracket. We were 1st in JV ahead of Dorman JV.

Individual (from what I remember):
1. Someone from Austin
2. Lowell Van Ness (Hoover)
3. Me (William Horton, Alpharetta)
4. ?
5. Todd Faulkenberry (Dorman)

Sorry, I meant the finals bracket. We played a round-robin finals bracket with the top 4 teams from the prelims.

As far as taking your team out of varsity contention, William, I don't know why we made that decision. If you had made the finals bracket, we definitely would not have taken you out of that. We thought since you put your team as JV, you'd rather play other teams for JV contention if you didn't make the varsity finals bracket.

I will have complete stats up sometime either today or tomorrow.

Yeah, what you did made sense, and I'm more frustated with myself for playing badly in that loss to Brindlee that put us out of the finals bracket. It just stunk to be out of the finals bracket on PPG, since we had the same record as Brookwood, the 4th place team. In the end, we were fine with playing in the JV playoffs, since we were a JV team.

Stats are now up on the NAQT website. Mudkip (Chattahoochee) is "ineligible for the national championship"? Is it because they were playing as an unaffilliated team?

EDIT: Well, I guess it doesn't matter because they placed fourth and the tournament only could give 3 spots.
