When I find out about them, updates will be put on this web page. That page also has information about the other HS events I'm actually running.

Thanks to all teams who attend the 2009 Toronto Winter Invitational! UTS defeated Woburn in the final, while White Cloud narrowed out St. Joseph's in the third place game. I'll be posting stats and a full tournament recap today or tomorrow. Thanks to Jason, Peter, Zhan, Zarya, Sinan, Chris, Rick, Muna, Andy and Mike for all the help.

The stats are done! Thanks to Chris and Andy for that.

The inaugural Toronto Winter Invitational took place on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at St. George campus’ OISE Building at the University of Toronto. Again, thanks to all the teams and coaches who helped make the day so successful.

The final team ranking:
1) UTS
2) Woburn
3) White Cloud A
4) St. Joseph’s A
5) South
6) Brother Andre A
7) St. Augustine A
8) Bishop Allen B
9) Bishop Allen A
10) North Park A
11) St. Joseph’s B
12) Holy Cross
13) Mayfield
14) White Cloud JV
15) North Park B
16) Brother Andre B
17) St. Augustine JV
18) Brother Andre JV

The teams were split into three groups of six, where a round-robin was played. The top two teams from each group formed a new playoff pool, while the top middle teams from each group formed a middle pool, and the bottom two teams from each group formed the consolation pool.

In Group A, St. Joseph’s A, led by preliminaries top scorer Michael Li (85.00 ppg) went undefeated, while Brother Andre A, North Park A and Bishop Allen B were left tied for second at 3-2. Two 8-tossup tiebreakers were played, with the two lower-scoring teams, Bishop Allen B and North Park A, facing-off in the first, with the winner, North Park A, facing Brother Andre A in the second. Brother Andre A took the tiebreaker 150-55, and advanced to the playoff pool with St. Joseph’s. Mayfield (1-4) and St. Augustine JV (0-5) moved to the consolation pool.

In Group B, UTS and White Cloud A both went undefeated until facing each other in round 5, which UTS took 305-140. Bishop Allen A was third with a 3-2 record. Like in Group A, a tiebreaker was needed to determine fourth place, as Holy Cross, North Park B and Brother Andre JV were all tied at 1-4. The procedure worked the same as for the other tiebreaker, with Holy Cross taking the tiebreaker by defeating North Park B 80-40 in the 8-tossup tiebreaker. Brian McNamara (North Park) Jenny Gu (UTS), Cameron Wilson (White Cloud) all finished in the top 6 in scoring from this pool (2nd, 3rd, 6th) respectively.

Group C featured no tiebreakers, as Woburn (5-0) and South (4-1) advanced to the playoff pool, with St. Augustine A (3-2) and St. Joseph’s B (2-3) moving to the middle pool, and Brother Andre B (1-4) and White Cloud JV (0-5) going to the consolation pool. Woburn won a narrow game over South in this pool, with the final score 225-190. St. Joseph’s B edged out Brother Andre B by 40 points, while St. Augustine A defeated White Cloud JV by only 35 points. The closest game in this pool, however, occurred when Brother Andre B defeated White Cloud JV 145-140. Benjamin Bourne (South) was the top-scoring junior, and finished fourth overall after the prelims, while Yohan Yee (Woburn), finished fifth overall and Tim Whelan (South) finished 7th.

The consolation pool allowed the three junior teams to compete against one another, with White Cloud JV taking the Top Junior team trophy, ultimately ending the day with a 3-6 record. Mayfield swept the bottom bracket, with 4 juniors on their roster, to finish 13th overall. Will Hall (Mayfield), Andy Li (Brother Andre) and Ricky Wilson (White Cloud), all juniors, were the all-stars of this division, putting up roughly 40 ppg each.

The middle pool was by and large one of the closest divisions. Bishop Allen B defeated Bishop Allen A in a close inter-school match, while North Park A went 2-2 and St. Augustine swept their four games (by only 25, 45, 55 and 25 points respectively) to finish in 7th overall. David Marrello (Bishop Allen B), Kelden Formosa (Bishop Allen A), Faiyaaz Haque (St. Joseph’s) and, of course, Brian McNamara (North Park) were the pool’s all-stars, the latter vaulting himself into first place over the whole tournament by the end of the day.

The new playoff pool, featuring UTS, White Cloud, St. Joseph’s A, Woburn, South and Brother Andre A, featured some close matches. UTS opened the bracket with a close 260-225 loss to South, but then recouped to score over 300 points in all their remaining games. South also narrowly lost to Brother Andre A, 205-175, who lost to Woburn 225-215 in Round 6. When all was said and done, UTS was the first seed, followed by Woburn, White Cloud, St. Joseph’s, South and Brother Andre. Those first four teams would advance to the playoffs.

After the individual awards for the preliminaries and the Top Junior Team trophy were handed out, several teams departed and the playoffs got underway. Woburn defeated White Cloud by a very close 20-point margin to advance to the finals, and UTS defeated St. Joseph’s. In the third-place game, with an HSNCT qualification spot on the line, there were 8-lead changes, and White Cloud eventually came out on top 240-205 in one of the day’s more exciting games. Despite leading only 100-90 after 9 tossups, UTS would win a convincing final over Woburn 405-180, to take the championship. Trophies were awarded to both the first and second-place teams, and medals were given to all the members (almost – some extras will be sent out soon).

Overall, it was an exciting day, and I thank all teams and players for the enthusiasm they showed throughout the tournament.

The top scorers after the preliminaries, with points per game, were:
1. Michael Li, St. Joseph’s A – 85.00
2. Brian McNamara, North Park A – 66.00
3. Jenny Gu, UTS – 59.00
4. Benjamin Bourne, South – 53.00
5. Yohan Yee, Woburn – 49.00
6. Cameron Wilson, White Cloud A – 47.00
7. Tim Whelan, South – 46.00
8. Mark Sotto, Brother Andre A – 45.00
9. Faiyaaz Haque, St. Joseph’s B – 38.56
10. Shafqat Ahmed, Woburn – 38.00
