ANNOUNCEMENT: 10/11 UMN Tourney: Ubu Roi Season Opener
ANNOUNCEMENT: 10/11 UMN Tourney: Ubu Roi Season Opener
This is a preliminary announcement for Minnesota's season-opening high school tournament, to be held on Saturday, October 11. The Ubu Roi will be held at Coffman Memorial Union, located at 300 Washington Ave. SE, Minneapolis 55455, on the beautiful University of Minnesota Campus.
We will begin registration at 8:00 AM, with games starting whenever we are ready. Please make an effort to be as on-time as possible so that we can use our time to play quizbowl and not to dilly-dally.
Rounds will be conducted on HSAPQ's packets of 20/20 tossup/bonuses. The tossups will be similar in length, style, and distribution to PACE, though they will be at the regular high school difficulty level. Further details are available upon request. Each team is guaranteed seven games, though we might change that in the upward direction at some point, since we really haven't discussed how the format will work and can't reasonably do so until we can figure out a rough estimate of how many teams will attend.
The tournament was initially going to be run on house-written questions, but we will now be using HSAPQ's excellent ACF-style set (the same one used at the Maryland Fall Classic) for this tournament.
Here's the fee table (subject to minor changes):
$70: Base Fee
-$10: Each additional team
-$10: Each working buzzer system
-$15: Out of state schools (once per school)
Please contact me at [email protected] to register for the tournament, or if you have any questions at all about the tournament logistics, distribution, lodging suggestions, or anything else.
I hope to see a great turnout for what promises to be an awesome tournament in early October!
Stay tuned for periodic field updates, as well as more detailed logistics, such as start time, meeting room, etc.
Thanks,
Andrew

I'd love to get more registrations for this tournament. Also, please note that the tournament will now be run on HSAPQ's first ACF-style set (the set that was used for the Maryland Fall Classic).

It's great to see that some more teams are registered.
By "regular high school difficulty", are we talking answer selection similar to an IS-set?
Thanks.

The difficulty should be typical of a fall invitational tournament. I would say it is typical of a HSAPQ set, but this is the first one.sam.peterson wrote:It's great to see that some more teams are registered.

No huge prelim surprises: Sweden Berry and Chaska A are 5-0, Minnetonka A and St. Anthony A are 4-1 and make up top rebracket. Craziness only ensued from lunch happening before 12 and restarting before 1.

Quick results: Chaska A cleared the field by two games after Sweden Berry lost a close final round game to Minnetonka A. Neg prize was The Bridges at Toko-Ri by James Michener. Full stats will be posted soon.
