Imaginary Landscape no. 2 Discussion

Post by magin »

Imaginary Landscape no. 2 is now clear for discussion. I'd especially like to thank my co-writers: Dave Letzler, Rebecca Maxfield, and Jacob Reed. They came up with many good ideas and provided great feedback on many questions, and really improved the tournament.

The distribution was:

5 Composers
4 Choral Music/Opera/Ballet
3 Orchestral/Symphonic
1 Piano
1 Chamber/Instrumental
1 Country
1 Jazz
1 Musical
1 Movie
1 Pop Culture
1 Other/Miscellaneous

I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts and reactions.

I was very glad that you constructed film composer tossups instead of just tossups on popular films. These were excellent and featured numerous strong clues.

I had a great time writing this (or rather, writing the ones I did). Would definitely appreciate feedback, if anyone has any.

Mine were: Les Contes d'Hoffmann, the Devil (already aware that due to a miscommunication, certain alternate answers weren't accepted -- sorry), Dido and Aeneas, Folk Song Suitem Les Huguenots, Jefferson Airplane, The Light in the Piazza, A Little Night Music, The Messiah, Orfeo ed Euridice, polkas, I Puritani, Der Rosenkavalier, Turandot, Kurt Weill

Why do you picture John of Gaunt as a rather emaciated grandee?

N.B. Do not attempt to answer more than one question at a time.

Thanks--Jonathan did Herrmann and Zimmer, and I did Goldsmith, Bernstein, and Rosza.

This was a fun tournament to come out of retirement from. I was mildly worried that it might skew a hair difficult as Jonathan and I exhausted our leftover ideas from 2011, but it seems that wasn't a problem. I'm glad everyone seemed to have fun--wish I'd been at one of the sites to watch it play out.

The Zimmer one featured a clue from I think True Romance; this piece of music is very similar to Orff's Gassenhauer which was featured in other films as well (such as Badlands and Finding Forrester).

I realized I forgot to post links to the packets, so here they are:

Packet 1: https://app.box.com/s/9cjrh6f96um752scc4vk

Packet 7: https://app.box.com/s/41werd8fdlvbqrgxzyn0
Packet 8: https://app.box.com/s/wuhmam1jr4ayu8mkjq1g

The answer lines are attached as well.

Also, to respond to Mike, the Zimmer clue "You're So Cool" is indeed based on Gassenhauer, but I considered the two pieces different enough that no one would confuse them. I may have been mistaken, but to my ears, Gassenhauer is fairly different from the Zimmer version.
