Hoover Middle School Melee (11/4/2017)

Post by Joshua Rutsky »

Coaches:

We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Hoover Middle School Melee for the first time this year! This event will be held on Saturday, November 4th at Hoover High School in Hoover, AL. Our projected field cap is 32 teams.

This event will be held using the HIGS MS set, and will use NAQT-style rules (powers, negs, 3 part bonuses without bounceback, no worksheets). Teams will be guaranteed seven rounds of play. Lunch will be available on site to keep things moving smoothly.

We do not like to cap the number of teams coming from out of state, as we know it is sometimes more practical to get a bus and come if you have four or five squads. If we reach a hard cap, we will let people know well in advance. Additionally, we respect and understand the costs involved with travelling from state to state, particularly for smaller schools and public schools. For this reason, we are happy to consider discounting your entry fee if you are bringing multiple teams and request us to do so. We think that if we do our job well hosting, you'll come back again. Teams looking for this discount or waiver need only email me to let me know.

Fee structure for this year will be as follows:

$70 for first team
$60 for each additional team
-$5 per working buzzer (limit 2)
-$5 for experienced reader (as needed--we have a limited number of these discounts to offer).

Lunch will be offered on site, with snacks available throughout the day. There are multiple hotels within a five minute drive of our school; look for listings on Highway 150 or John Hawkins Parkway for best options.

Please contact me for further information via PM or by emailing me at jrutsky at hoover dot k12 dot al dot us.

Today's Middle School Melee featured 23 teams. Congratulations are in order for:

- Midtown Classical A, who won the 7th/8th grade division and went a perfect 10-0 for the day
- Robert Muniz of Midtown Classical A, who put up 165 PPG and had 110 (!) powers on the day, winning the Tourney MVP award. You'd never guess this guy is the defending National History Bee Champion for Middle School and former champion for Elementary. Never. Didn't show at all.
- The other top overall teams, Monrovia A (2nd), and Baldwin Magnet and Midtown Classical B (Semifinalists)
- 5th/6th place winners, Midtown Classical B, and 2nd place, Highlands School C

Due to some stat entry hiccups in the morning, we did not have a completely correct individual awards list. We would like to acknowledge Rebecca Jansen of Monrovia A, who placed 7th on the corrected list, and we will be sending her an All-Star medal.

Complete stats are available at http://www.bit.ly/2017MSMSTATS. Please note that the "Team Rank" numbers are not accurate, as we rebracketed after lunch into tiers to determine finish order.

Thanks to all the teams for coming, and to Hieu and company for allowing us to mirror HIGS for this event.
