1970s Music - Prelim to the Bracket

Post by AKKOLADE »

Edit: 2/24

Here's a list of songs I have scheduled to listen to.This is not all inclusive, but everything that's on Spotify will go through that playlist.

Here's a list of songs that have made the shortlist, so they're the chosen song for their artist and will be considered for the final field. Obviously I have some catching up to do, and not all songs will be on Spotify.

------

I've decided to start posting about what I'm listening to while doing other work around the house in my attempt to narrow a list of over 3000 songs down to under 100 for a bracket. Again, I'm starting with the Acclaimed Music list of singles for the decade and then, if time allows, switching to the top albums from the same site for clean up purposes.

I'm going to start out with artists that only have one or two songs listed so I can rapidly move through them. Also, I don't know if I can stand to listen to seven straight 10cc songs.

And, of course, you're welcome to listen along and make your own observations.

Bobby Bland's Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City is almost guaranteed to make it. This is great 70s soul/funk. The delayed intro of the backup singers is really satisfying in particular.

A Foot in Coldwater's (Make Me Do) Anything You Want almost didn't make it until about 2 minutes in, when it shifted to a pretty decent solo that made the song interesting, rather than a generic soft rock song of the era. Still, I don't think this is going to advance.

A Taste of Honey's Boogie Oogie Oogie starts out as a run of the mill disco song, but quickly shakes that off and establishes itself as something special. A lovely mix of disco and funk with pop sensibilities. This could make it.

Aaron Neville's Hercules is good but doesn't stick out that much.

I didn't recognize Ace's How Long until it got to the keys and then had a "oh crap" moment. I couldn't remember who sang this, despite listening to a lot of oldies as a kid. This is some extremely good yacht rock.

Ace Frehley's New York Groove is next. I'm probably going to stick with this as a solo effort, even though it was released as part of each Kiss member getting a solo album basically simultaneously. This is a solid rock song of the era with a great beat. It's probably going to be borderline, depending on how many songs I can limit myself to.

Adam and The Ants' had two songs on this list: Zerox and
Cartrouble. Zerox has a great opening riff but kind of becomes an average punk song for the era. Cartrouble is the superior song in my opinion, with more of a pop punk sound that works well.

Adriano Celentano's Prisencólinensináinciúsol. This song is, if nothing else, really interesting. The Italian singer decided to write a song in is meant to sound like English but is all gibberish outside of the phrase "all right." This is surprisingly good despite its gimmicky nature, but I don't think it's getting in.

Al Wilson Show and Tell - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItgAlRuafaU

Okay soul song, with a great chorus but nothing really noteworthy in the verses. The groove is solid but nothing else.

Albert Hammond It Never Rains in Southern California - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqMEEvmfyQU

Solid pop song. Close to being over-produced. Borderline at best.

Alberto Fortis La sedia di lillà – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNFbVN9ym7Y

Nah man.

Alex Chilton Bangkok - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YDf7aWHdK0

Nothing special as a rock song.

Alicia Bridges I Love the Nightlife (Disco 'Round) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh02Tt6BG_M

One of the best disco songs ever. The horn section in particular makes it pop. Likely to appear.

Alternative TV Love Lies Limp - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0Rhac7Y1YI

An cross of punk and reggae, which seems like it was a pretty noteworthy combination at the time. I don’t think it does enough to establish itself beyond that, though.

Althea and Donna Uptown Top Ranking - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMrNDnU6PPk

A pretty good reggae song. Probably won’t make it if I’m being honest, but it’s under consideration.

Amanda Lear Follow Me - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9dDE6uyBkY

Very plain disco/pop song of the era. Nothing special at all.

Amazing Rhythm Aces Third Rate Romance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRLehllONGI

Sounds a bit like Quicksilver Messenger Service or other “alt country” acts of the era. This is under consideration.

Amii Stewart Knock on Wood - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKuJUxGntRI

A really interesting disco take on the soul classic. I would have loved this if it weren’t for the overproduction. It’s still amazingly catchy and worthy of discussion.

Also, that head piece in the music video is amazing.

Andy Kim Rock Me Gently - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyJHSNEfzDA

Famous yacht rock song. Walks the line between catchy and corny until the second chorus. In consideration.

Bloodstone Natural High - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0KzLo0-6Ro

Great, great Motown-style R&B. This is a very strong contender for the bracket.

On the one hand, it's awesome that you are doing this. On the other hand, I'm not sure you know what you are getting into. Do you know how good a song has to be to get in the Top 64 for the 1970s?

Here are two facts to keep in mind when you do this:
1) There were over 3000 days during the 1970s.
2) On most of those days, somebody released a song better than Mr. Brightside.

A lot of the songs listed above as having a chance don't really have a chance. The competition is too strong.

A few questions:
1) When a rock song goes against a disco song, will you show White Sox fans storming the field?
2) Given the rise of Dr. Demento during the 1970s, will you consider songs such as Fish Heads?
3) Will you use power matching instead of elimination? Songs from the 1970s were made to last.

To show you what you are up against, I tried to figure out how I would seed this. Here is a list where the first 4 are the #1 seeds, the next 4 are the #2 seeds, etc.

Born To Run
Imagine
Let It Be
Stairway To Heaven
Hotel California
Layla
No Woman No Cry
Superstition
Bohemian Rhapsody
Free Bird
Papa Was a Rollin' Stone
Roxanne
Bridge Over Troubled Water
Dream On
Highway to Hell
Me and Bobby McGee
Fire And Rain
Lean on Me
Walk on the Wild Side
Wish You Were Here
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Lola
Rock Lobster
Stayin' Alive
Iron Man
Moondance
What's Going On
Won't Get Fooled Again
American Pie
I Will Survive
It's Too Late
Let's Stay Together
Help Me
London Calling
Maggie May
Piano Man
Candle in the Wind
Jolene
Killing Me Softly With His Song
Midnight Train to Georgia
Go Your Own Way
I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
Le Freak
Wild Horses
Heart of Gold
Lady Marmalade
My Sweet Lord
Ohio
Changes
God Save the Queen
Summertime Blues
Theme from Shaft
Psycho Killer
School's Out
That Lady (Part 1 & 2)
The Harder They Come
All Right Now
Rapper's Delight
Sultans of Swing
Truckin'
Love to Love You Baby
Nobody Does It Better
Solsbury Hill
Wonderful Tonight

Here are some songs that are totally awesome that didn't make the cut:
Ain't No Sunshine
Alison
All the Young Dudes
Blitzkrieg Bop
Dancing Queen
Don't Fear the Reaper
Glad
Good Times
Heart of Glass
Lust for Life
Maybe I'm Amazed
Money (That's What I Want)
More Than a Feeling
My Sharona
One Nation Under a Groove
Personality Crisis
Pressure Drop
Riders on the Storm
Sail Away
Sex Machine
Smoke on the Water
Surrender
Sweet Jane
Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)
The Boys Are Back in Town
We've Only Just Begun
Who'll Stop the Rain

I'm not saying that you should just take my seedings, because I'm sure you could do better. If I spent more time on this, I could do better. I'm just saying that to make it into this tournament a song has to be at least as good as these songs, and that's a high bar. It's possible that I Love the Nightlife makes that cut, but it's possible that it doesn't. As 1970s White Sox great Oscar Gamble would put it if he was still alive, "They don't think it be like it is, but it do."

The very idea that "The Boys Are Back In Town," the finest song ever recorded about the boys being back in town, wouldn't make the bracket makes me seriously concerned.

Agreed.
For me though, the one song that stays with me from them is "Identity," only because I mutter it under my breath whenever we talk about identity in an anthro class.

Maybe I scrolled through the list too quickly, but I'm disappointed to not see any Earth, Wind and Fire or Michael Jackson (either something from Off the Wall or with his brothers). I'm also sad to see "Close to You" and "Love Will Keep Us Together" fail to make the list. Also just in general, I think disco music is pretty underrepresented on here. I'm probably pretty biased, though.

So you included the New York Mets’ current victory song, “New York Groove”, but left out their previous, much better victory song, “Takin’ Care of Business”? I don’t accept this.

I'm just listing songs as I react to them. Hadn't even got to BTO yet.

For sake of time, I'm going to just go and list songs that I'm cutting for now. There'll be some duplicates from previous posts. This isn't to say these songs aren't good, either. There's a few that I haven't listened to before that I'm making a note of for further personal listening. Finally, the inclusion of a song by an artist doesn't mean that artist is eliminated from the bracket - in a couple of cases, I've made a decision on the one song for that artist that I'm advancing for further consideration.

A Foot in Coldwater - (Make Me Do) Anything You Want
Aaron Neville - Hercules
Adam and The Ants - Zerox
Adriano Celentano - Prisencólinensináinciúsol

Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting
Carol Douglas - Doctor's Orders
Andy Gibb - I Just Wanna Be Your Everything
Ann Peebles - I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down
Anne Briggs - Blackwater Side
Arco Iris - Mañana Campestre
The Band - Acadian Driftwood

The Band - It Makes No Difference
The Band - Don't Do It
Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Mainstreet
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Night Moves
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Old Time Rock and Roll
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - We've Got Tonite
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Hollywood Nights
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Rock and Roll Never Forgets
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Still the Same
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - The Fire Down Below
Chuck Berry - My Ding-a-Ling
Cliff Richard - We Don't Talk Anymore
Three Dog Night - Joy to the World
Three Dog Night - Black and White
The Hollies - The Air That I Breathe
The Raiders [Paul Revere & The Raiders] - Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian)
Foghat - Fool For the City
Stealers Wheel - Late Again

Damn, this is good. I haven't listened to a lot of Magma before, but I'm going to now!

For a thread about "the best music of the 70s", this list has a massive prog deficiency. Allow me to make a few suggestions (some of these might be a bit long):

Yes - Heart of the Sunrise
Rush - La Villa Strangiato
Rush - Xanadu
King Crimson - Lark's Tounges in Aspic, Part One
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Karn Evil 9, 1st Impression Part 2
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Tarkus
Genesis - Watcher of the Skies

Magma is godlike. A former teammate of mine at MSU actually introduced me to them and The Mars Volta (also excellent but not from the 70s) on long car rides from QB tournaments. I'm a huge Rush fan; everyone knows "Tom Sawyer" but my favorite album from them is Hemispheres from 1978 which contains "La Villa Strangiato" and "The Trees" which some online claim is about Quebec independence. King Crimson is an obvious inclusion to any best of the 70s list but their best album came out in 1969. I think I have heard In the Wake of Poseidon because my dad owns the record but it's not as good as In the Court of the Crimson King. As an aside, music from Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Cream and Jimmi Hendrix is the only music both me and my father like so I selfishly want at least some music from that group to be included in this list.

A song by Yes and Genesis should be clearly included as well.

Lastly, there is no such thing as a prog song that is too long. Some of my favorite songs are 20 minutes long. If there is interest, maybe the next bracket could only be prog songs.

As an aside, music from Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Cream and Jimmi (sic) Hendrix is the only music both me and my father like so I selfishly want at least some music from that group to be included in this list.

A song by Yes and Genesis should be clearly included as well.

Lastly, there is no such thing as a prog song that is too long. Some of my favorite songs are 20 minutes long. If there is interest, maybe the next bracket could only be prog songs.
Good luck. I'm moderately into prog, but subjecting the masses to 12-minute preludes that played to niche audiences when they were popular (40 years ago) is going to be a tough sell. You'll probably find what I found when I proposed a metal ranking thread (crickets), and so this is probably matter best suited for a private conversation or, even better, a tournament conducted in the privacy of your own mind.

Darn. Seems like my music interests are more niche than I thought. I only listen to metal and prog which apparently aren't big in the QB community. I'm part of a big Facebook group to talk about these bands so it's no big deal if quizbowlers do not want to talk about these genres. I still maintain that any 1970s bracket needs prog representation based on how big these bands used to be even if they aren't as popular today.

PROPOSAL: a four-song list that voters rank, consisting of:

"The Boys Are Back In Town"
ELP's "Hoedown"
"Blitzkrieg Bop"
"Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough"

Everything else is redundant; everyone knows Queen is amazing so ranking them is unnecessary.

I love Tool, but Tool fans are the worst for R&M level arrogance about "time signatures", "symbolism", "spiritual awakenings", etc. Most fans of like Jethro Tull are chill older dudes.

How about a '70s/00s mashup bracket, cause this would win:

This tournament could use some field expansion. I'm not talking about a few play-in games--I'm talking about IPNCT levels of field expansion.

Or it’ll be a lot of fun, as I suddenly become the greatest heel in quiz bowl.

I’m pretty sure Rob would ban me if I expanded the tournament beyond, say, 128 songs.

*cries enormous salt tears that such masterpieces of the musical form have been omitted*

Agree with Harris that prog deserves its place in the tournament, given that it's one of the most significant genres in 1970s popular music. In addition to the ones earlier suggested, I would like to put these very fine records into consideration:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CuOld2ldrc - (Killer by Van Der Graaf Generator)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_pDwv3tpug (Red by King Crimson, from the best King Crimson album... Red)

Are we having non-Anglophile representation in this tournament? If so, I think some Krautrock should be included given a) how fantastic much of it is and b) how enormous its influence was on much of the most interesting British and American music of the time (Bowie and Eno for instance). Some tunes that are good:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUVEnXw8zH0 - (I'm so Green by Can)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRxvQmTTz5I - (It's a Rainy Day Sunshine Girl by Faust)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzSi1qPxBIQ - (Archangel's Thunderbird by Amon Duul II)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0D7MBBI2Ik - (Radioactivity by Kraftwerk)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO7w90Y ... oeNkYtXp5L - (Isi by NEU!)

Other songs that I'm going to mention because why the hell not?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIAZ8unRm2c - (Public Image by Public Image Ltd. - better than anything by the Sex Pistols)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZty5DTmpMY (Non-Alignment Pact by Pere Ubu)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkFLeGBJ3LI (Editions of You by Roxy Music - or anything else from the astounding For Your Pleasure album)

There was a ridiculous amount of great music made in the 1970s. It'll be very hard for this tournament not to be enormous fun.

I'm anticipating that this bracket should be lots of fun, for one of the reasons the 2000s bracket was (exposure to wide varieties of music that was beyond my knowledge when we started). This will probably be more pronounced as we go back 50 years, and people's musical factionalism, I expect, will be less evident. Or at least I hope. All I know of the 70s comes from listening to classic rock radio from the womb onwards.

The eligible Paul Simon & Simon & Garfunkel songs are:

Paul Simon 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover
Paul Simon Kodachrome
Paul Simon Mother and Child Reunion
Paul Simon Me and Julio Down by the School Yard
Paul Simon Still Crazy After All These Years
Paul Simon Slip Slidin' Away
Paul Simon Peace Like a River
Paul Simon American Tune
Paul Simon with The Dixie Hummingbirds Loves Me Like a Rock
Simon and Garfunkel Bridge Over Troubled Water
Simon and Garfunkel The Only Living Boy in New York
Simon and Garfunkel Cecilia
Simon and Garfunkel My Little Town
Simon and Garfunkel El condor pasa (If I Could)

I feel like this is a clear case where both a solo & a S&G song could make it in without an issue.
