LONE STAR ready for mirrors, 2020-21, HS Regular Difficulty
LONE STAR (Look Out, a New and Exciting Set of Texan Academic Rigor) will be ready for mirrors from the start of the entire 2020-21 season!
I, Daniel Ma, am head editing this set; besides Dr. Mukherjee and Michael Yue, all other set members, as of now, are Texans, hence the name. The set team is currently composed of Aayush Goodapaty, Akshay Shyam, Daniel Ma, Eric Mukherjee, Jisoo Yoo, Johnny Vasilyev, Josh Rubel, Ketan Pamurthy, Michael Artlip, Michael Patison, Michael Yue, Ned Tagtmeier, Nikita Nair, Robert Condron, Roman Madoerin, and Thomas Gioia.
The set will consist of thirteen 20/20 packets (20 pyramidal, powermarked tossups, 20 three-part bonuses). Each tossup will be 450-550 characters long and each full bonus totaling at most 8 lines in 10 point Times New Roman font.
This set will be High School Regular Difficulty, approximately equal in difficulty to NAQT's Invitational Series sets, and we aim for questions that will both be accessible to newer teams and still be interesting and engaging for more experienced veterans.
Distribution
There will be no computational math.

Re: LONE STAR ready for mirrors, 2020-21, HS Regular Difficulty
We have been writing at a remarkably efficient rate and have done 40% of the set in 20 days. As such, we are taking mirror requests for tournaments occurring at any point in the season.

There will be computer science as a small part of the math distribution; I forgot to mention this. Thanks for the catch!

We're over 2/3 done and have started rapidly editing. We expect to have playtesting sessions in the near future for people not eligible to play the set (i.e. people older than HS) and perhaps a middle school online mirror in late August, specifics TBD.

Provisionally, we will be running our own regional online mirrors for the Northeast, DC Area, Illinois, Texas, California, and perhaps the eastern Midwest (Ohio/Western Pennsylvania/Indiana/Michigan etc). Dates are being determined.

Of the sets from the 2019-2020 season that can be found on quizbowlpackets.com, LONE STAR is most similar to CALISTO, LOGIC, WAIT, and RAFT. It is also similar to NAQT's Invitational Series sets.adhvaithr7 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 07, 2020 1:20 pm What packets are similar to LONE STAR? The team I coach played this set a couple of months ago, and it seems like all the mirrors are over. Will this set be made public anytime soon?

After being played by 323 teams around the country over the past season (near-record levels for a housewrite), LONE STAR is now open to discussion.
