2022 ACF Nationals: April 9-10, University of Minnesota

Post by kearnm7 »

This is the announcement of 2022 ACF Nationals, which will be held April 9-10, 2022 at the University of Minnesota. The tournament will be held in Blegen Hall and Willey Hall on "West Bank".

John Lawrence will be head editor of this tournament; Will Alston, Stephen Eltinge, Stephen Liu, Eric Mukherjee, and Adam Silverman will also be editors. Michael Kearney will be Tournament Director. The field cap for the tournament will be 54 teams.

Eligibility

Information on who is eligible to play ACF tournaments can be found here.

Qualification

Information on qualification for ACF Nationals can be found here.

Packet Submission

The editors of ACF Nationals are planning on writing 13 packets this year. Like the past three ACF Nationals, packet submission will be optional for ACF Nationals this year. The editors of ACF Nationals will work with teams interested in submitting to arrange packet submission, looking to get enough team submissions to make 10 total submitted packets.

The distribution for ACF Nationals submitted packets is posted on the ACF website.

Finalized tossups for 2022 ACF Nationals will be capped at 8 lines in 10 point Times New Roman. However, this cap does not apply to submissions; submitting teams are allowed and encouraged to submit longer tossups.

Like previous years:
2019 ACF Nationals Announcement wrote: Under this arrangement, packet submission will not be mandatory, but we're counting on teams capable of writing quality packets to work with us to ensure that we have enough submissions to edit the tournament. If we can't be sure that we'll have enough packets to make this work, we'll consider other options.
Additionally, if you submit a packet before registering for the tournament and subsequently do not attend ACF Nationals, whether because you do not qualify or because you choose not to attend, that packet can still be used for ACF Nationals. The discount the packet would have earned will roll over to the next ACF tournament that the school sends a team to. If the discount is greater than $70 (ACF's share of tournament fees), it can be spread among multiple teams from the same school, or the difference between $70 and the amount of the discount can be rolled over to a further tournament. Rolling over a discount does not preclude submitting a packet for the next ACF tournament, should that be required.

Base fee: $325
Buzzer discount: -$10 per functioning buzzer system (with eight functioning buzzers).
Staffer discount: -$100 for each staffer capable of reading a round in ca. 35 minutes.
Packet discounts are listed below.

Teams will owe half the registration fee if they drop from the field with less than four weeks to go before the tournament (after March 11) and the full registration fee if they drop from the field with less than two weeks to go before the tournament (after March 25).

New this year: teams will be required to declare their intent to submit a packet for a particular deadline two weeks in advance in order to receive that deadline's discount. This will enable the editors to properly forecast and plan workloads. Teams should fill out this form to declare their intent to submit a packet for a particular deadline.
  • -$100 packet submission discount: packet registered by Sunday, January 2 and submitted by Sunday, January 16.
  • -$50 packet submission discount: packet registered by Sunday, February 6 and submitted by Sunday, February 20.
  • -$25 packet submission discount: packet submitted by Sunday, February 27 and submitted by Sunday, March 13.
All packet submission deadlines are at 11:59 P.M. Central Time on the given day to [email protected]. We will continue to offer an additional $50 dollar discount to any team that submits a packet with almost all questions usable with little to no editing.

Attendees of ACF Nationals — whether players, staffers, or spectators — must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and submit proof to that effect. ACF’s definition of “fully vaccinated” will be the CDC’s definition on March 1, 2022, so players may be required to receive boosters if CDC guidelines decide it appropriate.

More details about fees, field size, the question distribution, and staffing will be available in the coming months.

ACF has received bids to host 2022 ACF Nationals from a number of different institutions. We are currently seeking clarification on certain logistical questions from those institutions to ensure a considered decision is made. ACF hopes to announce a site as soon as possible and appreciates the community's patience during this process.

The first (-$100) packet deadline will be January 16, but intent to submit a packet by that deadline must be submitted by January 2. I have posted a full schedule in the main post.

I am pleased to announce that the University of Minnesota has been selected as the site of the 2022 ACF Nationals! Additional details, including the field size, will be forthcoming as they become available. Please note, though, that the rooms at the university will not be officially confirmed until the beginning of its second semester, in mid-/late-January. It is our expectation that confirmation will come by the date of ACF Regionals, but teams should refrain from booking travel and accommodation until a clear go-ahead is given. ACF is also pursuing a backup site in the unlikely event that confirmation does not arrive in a timely manner.

tnyowheoma wrote: Sun Nov 14, 2021 11:30 pm Hi everyone, the bid form for ACF Regionals is now open! Bids will be accepted until 11:59 PM Pacific time on Friday, November 26, with sites set to be announced the following Wednesday, December 1. Registration for teams will open soon after bids are announced.

ACF is still allowing for in-person and online sites for 2022 Regionals. Hosts of in-person and online sites can still send in wildcard bids for ACF Nationals without fielding a house team. However, only teams who attend in-person Regionals sites will be able to qualify by A-value. Teams without in-person Regionals sites close to them will be able to apply for a wildcard bid. The process for ACF Nationals qualification is written out here on ACF's website. Prospective hosts (and teams) and welcome to email me at [email protected] with any questions.
Due to the current course of pandemic, ACF is altering the aspects of this policy that pertain to Nationals qualification. ACF will allow online Regionals mirrors to operate as full qualifiers for 2022 Nationals, functioning identically to in-person sites. Winners of online sites and winners of the undergraduate championship at online sites (presuming at least four total undergraduate teams from at least two total schools are present) will earn automatic qualification to ACF Nationals, with all other participating teams being entered into the A-value list for at-large qualification. The full details on ACF's Nationals qualification policy are available here.

Players at online sites of Regionals will be required to follow ACF's new integrity policy for online play, which can be read here.

Please direct any questions about Nationals qualification to me.
Please see this post for an update on qualification for 2022 ACF Nationals via online mirrors of ACF Regionals.

It is my pleasure to announce that rooms have been confirmed for the University of Minnesota for Nationals. I have edited the post to reflect that the field is confirmed at 48 teams; A-values are available here.

Fee details and official bid acceptance emails for the tournament will be available tomorrow, February 9.

Please note that attendees of ACF Nationals — whether players, staffers, or spectators — must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and submit proof to that effect. ACF’s definition of “fully vaccinated” will be the CDC’s definition on March 1, 2022, so players may be required to receive boosters if CDC guidelines decide it appropriate.

I am extremely pleased to announce that ACF will be expanding the field of 2022 ACF Nationals from 48 to 54 teams, making this the largest ACF Nationals ever. Teams will be emailed shortly with details on how to accept their bids. Please note that this is the finalized field size: there will be no further expansion.
