CORGII (1/22/22, CALISTO 2)

Post by joycan98 »

choate quiz bowl! is excited to announce the second iteration of our annual quiz bowl tournament, titled CORGII (Choate-Organized Regional Grand Invitational II). The tournament will be held in person at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, CT on Saturday, January 22. The backup date in the case of inclement weather will be January 29th.

Format, Eligibility, and Questions
The tournament will consist of 5 preliminary rounds, a lunch break, 5 playoff rounds, and a final round. Check-in will be open between 7:45am and 8:30am. An opening meeting for staffers and players will be held at 8:30am, and the first round will begin promptly at 9:00am. A meeting for scoring prizes will be held either after lunch or after the last round, depending on how fast statistics are processed. The last round is projected to end by 6pm.

This tournament is open to those who are high school seniors or younger. All teams must consist of players from the same school. This tournament will use both tossups and bonuses, and will use CALISTO 2, a regular high school level set. More details about the set can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=109&t=25155. The field is capped at 24 teams.

Payment Information
The base price for this tournament is $90 for the first team from each school and $75 for each additional team, with the following discounts:
-$25 per affiliated staffer (see the Staffers section)
-$5 per functioning lock-out buzzer system
-$20 per team for schools who have not played pyramidal quiz bowl in the past 3 years
The minimum payment is $45 per team.
AS OF 12/11/21: We do not need any more buzzers, and will not be offering buzzer discounts to subsequent registrations.
AS OF 12/19/21: We do not need any more staffers, and will not be offering staffer discounts to subsequent registrations.

Schools can pay for the tournament in any of the following ways:
-check made out to Choate Rosemary Hall and given to the tournament directors on site
-credit card payment made over the phone to Mejrema Duracek at 203-697-2510
-cash paid to the tournament directors on site
We will require teams to pay before the tournament begins. Teams who fail to pay for their registration before the tournament begins will not be allowed to play.

Registration
Register for this tournament using one of the three following methods.
-Fill out this Google Form: https://forms.gle/x4hN4nrg72i2fQFF7
-Email [email protected] with the following information: school name, number of teams, number of buzzers, name and position (coach, student, parent, etc) of affiliated staffers, expected payment method
-Reply to this forum post with the following information: school name, number of teams, number of buzzers, name and position (coach, student, parent, etc) of affiliated staffers, expected payment method, and contact information
Rosters will be collected from registered schools a week before the tournament. Please respond promptly to all requests for additional information or rosters.

Staffers
We are accepting outside staffing help, but there will be a very limited number of spots open for outside staffers. Our priority will be to take coaches and other experienced adults from registered schools as staffers before anyone else, and staffing spots are first come first serve. All staffers will be required to bring some electronic device from which they can read electronic files and/or access an online spreadsheet, and will need to have a Discord account. Staffers may be required to complete an online training session before the tournament, which could last up to two hours. If you would like to staff and you are not affiliated with a school, email [email protected].

Location and Food
The tournament will be held at Choate Rosemary Hall. For those driving in, use the address 283 N Main St, Wallingford, CT 06492. Our campus can be hard to navigate, so registered teams will receive more detailed directions in advance of the tournament.

Before the tournament starts, water, juice, and coffee will be available free of charge. Teams will be able to purchase additional breakfast items like bagels, muffins, and yogurt. For lunch and potentially dinner, there are many dining options within a 10 or 15 minute walk of the tournament location. We will provide teams with a list of recommendations for places to eat lunch. Teams will also be able to order food to campus. We will strive to give teams at least an hour to eat lunch.

Announcements/Discord Server
Registered teams can receive announcements about the tournament in a number of ways. We will have an email list, a text chain, and a Discord server. Teams can choose which way they would like to receive announcements during the tournament, though we ask that each registered school provide an email address. All staffers will be required to join the Discord server to facilitate centralized and efficient communication.

COVID-19 Protocols
All attendees of CORGII are required to be masked at all times while indoors, except when actively eating or drinking. While eating or drinking, social distancing protocol must be followed. All attendees of the tournament (including players, staffers, parents, and chaperones) must be able to provide either proof of full vaccination or proof of a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of arrival during the check-in process. Failure to provide one of the above will result in your removal from the tournament. All Choate staffers will be fully vaccinated.

Contact Information
The tournament directing team will consist of myself, Charles Spencer Bowles, and Athena Liu. You can contact any of us at [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected] if you have any questions.

We look forward to seeing you at CORGII!

IMPORTANT EDIT: This tournament will in fact be held in 2022. We are not time travelers.

An important update: we now have all the staffers and buzzers we need, so we will not be offering discounts to subsequently registered teams who bring staffers and/or buzzers. Thank you to all the schools who have brought staffers and buzzers!
