CERES National Mirror (Online, 2/12/2022)

Post by komododragon655 »

I am pleased to announce the national middle school mirror of CERES!

This tournament will be held on February 12th, 2022, and will be directed by members of Belmont Quiz Bowl and Conor Thompson.

We intend to function as a middle school national mirror with no geographical restrictions, designed for more experienced teams to have a chance to play the set. While other middle school teams are certainly allowed to play, we encourage novice teams to play another mirror.

Rules
Teams will consist of no more than 6 players, with only 4 players playing at a given time. All players are required to follow NAQT gameplay rules and active players must show one hand on camera during games if they do not have an exemption from a tournament director.

Format

This tournament will be capped at 16 teams. Though heavily dependent on the number of teams, we will aim to guarantee as many rounds as possible given the experienced nature of the teams. We will use 20 tossups and 20 three-part-bonuses per untimed round, and we will use both 15-points powers and negative-5-point negs. We will not be using bouncebacks. There will be no computational math.

Games will be played on Zoom, using Buzzin.live for buzzing. Teams will receive a link to join an optional central Discord server or be emailed for logistics and announcements.

Registration
Please register teams using this form. Outside staffers will be paid $25 for staffing the whole tournament and may sign up here. Staffers will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis until we have enough staff.

Fees
Base Fee: $70
Staff Discount: -$25
There will be a minimum fee of $0 per school. Teams who cancel without a legitimate reason after February 9th at 11:59 PM EST must pay the full fee.

Payment should be made out through Venmo, Paypal, or by check. We will send specific payment info prior to the tournament.

Stats
Team and individual stats will be posted on hsquizbowl.com within 24 hours of the end of the tournament. We will have live stats via Google Sheets. Category and subcategory stats will be made available at the end of the tournament.

Misconduct
Anyone involved with the tournament, including but not limited to: coaches, players, staff, tournament directors, and spectators must adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct. Misconduct can be reported to this form and/or sent to [email protected].

Contact
Please direct any questions to [email protected]. We hope to see your team here!

Field expansion: We have expanded our field to 16 teams, and are unlikely to expand it further.

A few updates:
- We will be allowing teams to play with a pseudonym. Please email us at [email protected] if you would like to use a pseudonym.
- We will be using 5/8/5 timing rules, that is 5 seconds after a buzz to start an answer, 8 seconds on a bonus to confer AND start directing an answer, and 5 seconds without a buzz to call a tossup dead.
- The tournament will likely start at 9 AM EST and run until, at the very latest, 6 PM EST.

The field for the CERES National Mirror has been filled, and we do not anticipate a further expansion of it. All teams who sign-up now will be placed on a waitlist, with priority given to schools without a team in the field. A roster/logistics email has been sent to all teams, please email [email protected] if you have not received this.

EDIT: One team has dropped. There is now space in the field for one more team!

EDIT 2: This spot has been filled. Big thanks to Clarke Middle School in Lexington, Massachusetts!
