AQBL: 2022 Invitational

Post by lava_lock »

The American Quiz Bowl League will be hosting a national mirror of the CERES question set via Discord on April 2nd and 3rd, 2022. The Western section (Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming) will be held on Saturday, April 2nd and the Eastern section (Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia) will be held on Sunday, April 3.

DATE AND TIME:
The Western section will take place on April 2nd, 2022, starting at 11 AM ET. All players and coaches should be logged onto the server by 10:45 AM ET.

The Eastern section will take place on April 3rd, 2022, starting at 9 AM ET. All players and coaches should be logged onto the server by 8:45 AM ET.

QUESTIONS + EVENT FORMAT:
In all divisions, the CERES set, a novice level set, will be used.

The set for this tournament will be using 20 tossups and bonuses per round. All players will be required to have their cameras on and to display both of their hands. Buzzin.live will be used to buzz during this tournament.

This tournament will use AQBL Ruleset A.

Teams will be seeded into preliminary brackets and re-seeded for playoffs. All teams are guaranteed 10 rounds. Teams are expected to stay and play the entire event, even if they drop out of contention for the championship.

For each of the Western and Eastern sections, there will be a novice division and a varsity division, all of which will have an initial field cap of 18 teams. The varsity division is for teams that do not meet novice guidelines, while the novice division is for teams that consist of players that meet the following guidelines:

- They must not have scored over 50 PPG at any high school tournament
- They must not have averaged over 2 powers per game over the course of any high school tournament
- They must not have placed in the top 25 teams of MSNCT
- Thety must not have been a member of an HSNCT playoff team or a team which finished in the top half of PACE

The TD team reserves discretion to move players whom they do not deem novice. The field for any division may be expanded provided enough moderators are available.

TEAMS:
Teams may field a maximum of 6 players with four active at any one time. Short-handed and single-player teams are welcome.

Substitutions will be permitted after 10 tossups or before a potential tiebreaker tossup. No one may switch teams during the tournament, even between teams from the same school.

Without exception, all players MUST be from the same school. This is not an open mirror; no “chimera” or mixed teams are permitted whatsoever. We are happy to allow pseudonymous teams and teams not directly sponsored by their school or district to register. However, we do have certain requirements for these teams, so please contact us via email or phone prior to registration and we will be happy to work with you.

To ensure our event functions smoothly, rosters must be submitted at least one week in advance. Coaches are welcome to spectate, as long as we know in advance.

For further information regarding the rules or for contact information, please see the full ruleset of the AQBL and the AQBL website.

FEES:
There will be a flat fee of $85 per team for either division. There is a $30 discount available for each moderator or scorekeeper you bring. Payment is due up front unless you choose to pay by check or purchase order, or make other arrangements with us directly. Payment can be made via mailed check, PayPal, Venmo, purchase order, or credit card via the AQBL website. Please do not mail cash. Note that PayPal and Credit Card payments incur a 3% fee. We can provide W-9 forms and invoices on request.

Write all checks to "The American Quizbowl League". Mail checks to American Quizbowl League c/o Nicholas Pruitt, 65 Campus Ave, Lewiston, ME 04240.

REGISTRATION:
Registration is open. In order to register, fill out the form located at this page.

Once you receive a confirmation from us, you are officially registered.

Please ensure you register prior to the day of the tournament. The deadline for dropping out of the field is one week prior to the event (Saturday, March 26th in this case), after which you will be responsible for the full amount due. If you cannot pay the full fee due to monetary reasons, please contact us at [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] and we will be happy to work with you.

STATS:
Full and complete team and individual stats will be posted within 48 hours after the completion of the tournament. The AQBL is using TJ Sheets for this competition and will provide both category and subcategory statistics.

MODERATORS:
We will take moderators and scorekeepers who want to staff this tournament. All staffers not affiliated with attending teams will be paid $30. If you have any further questions regarding any of the above, please email [email protected]. To register to staff, please fill out this form. Staff are required to complete sexual harassment prevention training that will take approximately an hour and attend a staff meeting.

NOTE:
Any misconduct, harassment, or poor behavior of any kind at our events will not be tolerated and offenders may be subject to being kicked from the tournament or other sanctions. If you ever feel unsafe at any quizbowl event, you are strongly encouraged to fill out this form, which allows for reporting (anonymized by request) of misconduct to organizations besides the AQBL; as the AQBL cannot view reports on the misconduct form and it takes time to process submissions, you should also report misconduct and any other urgent concerns to an Administrator of the AQBL
