2022 KICKOFF (HS Regular, 2022)

Post by oriley »

Hello!

This is the announcement for KICKOFF (Kinematic International Compendium of Knowledge Of Fall Facts), a high school regular difficulty set for the beginning of the 2022-23 season.

Editors:
Eric Mukherjee (Biology, Chemistry)
Jacob O’Rourke (Head Editor, Pop Culture)
Vedul Palavajjhala (RMPSS)
Jason Qin (Auditory and Other Fine Arts)
Owen Riley (History, Current Events)
Vishal Sareddy (Geography)
Geoffrey Wu (Physics, Other Science)
Nathan Zhang (Literature, Visual Fine Arts)

Set Details:
As “high school regular difficulty” roughly equates to NAQT’s IS or Collegiate Novice series, this set is appropriate for high school teams, as well as community college teams and newer/“novice” college undergraduate teams. Tossups will range from 500-600 characters, or 5-6 lines in size 10 Times New Roman font. Each part of each bonus will not exceed two lines; bonus “lead-ins” will also not exceed two lines.

There will be 13 packets of 20 tossups and 20 bonuses, with several additional questions set aside for tiebreakers. Tossups will be powermarked. Bonuses will have three parts, each worth 10 points.

The set will be available for mirrors starting Saturday, September 10, 2022.

A small number of large, “super-region”-type online mirrors will be ran on the set. We tentatively plan for these to be on Saturday, September 17.

We plan to record, edit, and upload a number of games at various mirrors as soon as we can clear the set. Therefore, we ask that all mirrors (including in-person tournaments) attempt to schedule for as close to September 17 as possible, ideally before the end of October.

Distribution:
The distribution of the set will be as follows.
4/4 History (1/1 American, 1/1 World, 1/1 European, 1/1 Ancient/Other)
4/4 Literature (1/1 American, 1/1 British/CAN/AUS/NZ, 1/1 European, 1/1 World/Other)
4/4 Science (1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 Other)
2.5/2.5 Fine Arts (1/1 Auditory, 1/1 Visual, 0.5/0.5 Other)
2/2 Religion and Mythology
1/1 Geography
1/1 Current Events
1/1 Pop Culture and Sports
0.5/0.5 Philosophy and Social Science

Our mirror fee is $17 per team, including any house teams that play the set.
-There is a $3/team penalty for not uploading detailed team and individual stats to either Neg5 or hsquizbowl.org.
-There is a $3/team penalty for failing to provide detailed team and individual category stats, which may be easily accomplished with TJSheets or UCSD Sheets. Providing scoresheets capable of calculating category stats to the editors would also be sufficient.

If you’re interested in mirroring the set, please email me at oriley1201 AT icloud DOT com, or email Jacob O’Rourke at jacob.orourke.7 [at] gmail.com, with KICKOFF somewhere in the subject line.

The set is now open for mirror requests. Mirror requests for later than October 31, 2022 will be rejected.

In particular, we would like to see in-person mirrors in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Ohio, and online mirrors for Nevada/Utah and the Pacific Northwest.

Sites which plan to attempt to record one or more games will be prioritized over sites that do not. Please at least make the attempt to record finals. All teams you record must sign some sort of waiver form granting you permission to record them, which we will provide to you. If teams are unwilling to be recorded, that is fine: don’t record them. We want all sites to at least ask.

If you would like to host, please email me at oriley1201 AT iCloud DOT com. Thanks!

The date this set (as well as Novice) clears has been extended to February, as there is a local league running on this set until then. As such, we may accept mirror requests through early February. Mirror requests should be emailed to me at oriley1201 AT iCloud DOT com.

KICKOFF is clear, except for packet 13 (which Owen will be reading in scrimmages online over the next little bit). The set can be found here once it is approved by a moderator.

I have to enter some of our stats into this sheet, but some basic stats can be found here.

Thanks to everyone who played the set, and to all of our hosts!
