Spring Academic Tournament at MIT (4/30, Prison Bowl XIV)

Post by linpaws »

MIT will be hosting its Spring Academic Tournament in person on Saturday, April 30th, using Prison Bowl XIV. More details about the set are here: viewtopic.php?t=25604.

The opening meeting will begin at 8:45AM ET and gameplay will begin at 9AM ET. I (Swapnil Garg) will be the tournament director. Please direct any questions about this site to me at swapnilg [at] mit (dot) edu.

This tournament is intended for any high school team in the New England region.

Format:
Rounds will consist of 20 tossup questions that can be answered by members of either team. If a team answers a tossup question correctly, they will then play an unrelated three-part bonus question that only their team can answer.

Each team can have up to six players on its roster, but only four players may play at any one time. Schools planning to bring seven or more players should register a second team.

Fees:
Base fee: $80
New to quizbowl discount: −$40
Buzzer discount: -$10
Travel discount: -$15 per 100 miles traveled according to Google Maps (in 100-mile intervals)

The new to quizbowl discount is intended for schools that have not sent a team to any mainstream high school academic tournament (not counting exclusively novice tournaments) since September 2020, and which have no players who competed in non-novice high school tournaments during that same period.

Payment:
We will accept payment in cash or check. If this is not feasible for your team, contact me at swapnilg [at] mit (dot) edu to arrange an alternative form of payment.

Registration:
To register, please email swapnilg [at] mit (dot) edu with your school name and the number of teams you are registering. The field cap is currently 24 teams.

After registration, teams will be sent waivers that all minors must fill out in order to compete.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to seeing you at the tournament, and are looking forward to an exciting day of in-person quiz bowl!

Field (as of 4/28) (# teams / # buzzers):
Hingham (1/0)
Belmont (2/2)
Weston (2/1)
Chenery (1/0)
Total: 6/3

We will be providing free lunch for all competitors (thanks to the MIT Undergraduate Association). More details will be sent out to registered teams soon.
