NAQT Collegiate Novice at Tusculum (11/12/2022)

Post by TusculumPearson »

This is the formal announcement and invitation of teams to Tusculum Collegiate Novice, a NAQT-formatted quizbowl tournament to be held at the Meen Center at Tusculum University on November 12, 2022.

We’re using the NAQT registration system for this tournament, and as such registrations are open and active for teams that have not played the NAQT collegiate novice at other sites, since we are one of the last tournaments using this set in the cycle. Feel free to register now:
<https://www.naqt.com/registration/regis ... &type=TEAM>

SET
The tournament is running on the NAQT Collegiate Novice set CNS-213C. It is an adaptation of the Invitational Series set IS-213 that is not only being used for high school events. As such, THIS IS A CLOSED COLLEGIATE EVENT and high school players and coaches will not be allowed to participate or spectate.

(We love our high school coach staffers. We will miss you.)

FEES AND DISCOUNTS

The base fee for this tournament is $70 per team. We won’t offer discounts for multiple teams registering; every team from a school will pay $70 base.

We do ask schools bringing multiple teams to supply staffers. We will provide a discount of $10 per staffer, with a maximum of two discounts per team (not per school). We will also supply discounts for buzzers provided, at $5 per buzzer, maximum of two discounts per team.

This makes the minimum fee per team $40. We will also support discounts for colleges that have not participated in a tossup-bonus quizbowl tournament in the past 5 years. Please contact Pearson <[email protected]> if this applies to your school.

We ask for staffers to register to participate, and we have a dedicated staffer registration form <https://forms.gle/uzpx76jxUWg9AEaLA>.

PRIZES
No trophies! There will be book prizes provided for top individuals and top teams.

CONTACT
The tournament director of Tusculum Earlybird is Chuck Pearson; all questions about tournament structure, fees, staffing, local amenities, and the like can be directed to <[email protected]>.

DISCLAIMERS
Some information is subject to change; if changes occur, they will be communicated to registered coaches directly.

And, as always, in the words of the genial quizmaster, all decisions of the tournament director are arbitrary, capricious, and final.

Come join us on November 12.

(Edited to correct the date in the announcement. The header's right; the text was off.)

Honors and gratitude after the revival of the Tusculum Collegiate Novice tournament on Saturday, November 12:

Congratulations to Virginia Tech’s entry (Soham Mehra, Jacob Lewis, Alex Rodriguez, Naira Rodriguez) for their field-clearing 10-0 performance, including an emphatic 500-110 victory in a de-facto final against Liberty A, to win Tusculum Collegiate Novice. Liberty A (Murray Callan, Joshua Schmidt, Derek Works, Emma Zajonc) and Belmont A (Lauren Brown, Landon Eversgerd, Maxwell Goskie, Justin Hetrick, Samuel Shepley) finished tied on 7-3 records; we resorted to Pearson’s favored tie-breaker (points per bonus) and awarded Liberty A 2nd (with 15.81 PPB) and Belmont A 3rd (with 14.75 PPB).

Top scorers on the day were awarded on the basis of the seven rounds of clean round-robin play. Soham Mehra claimed the medal for Virginia Tech with 112.9 PPG. Alexander Wyrick of Tennessee was 2nd with 66.4 PPG. The rest of the top 10: Joshua Schmidt (Liberty A), Justin Hetrick (Belmont A), Alex Rodriguez (Virginia Tech), Kathryn Purdy (Liberty B), Samuel Shepley (Belmont A), Brady Pinter (Belmont B), Richard Davis (Tennessee), and Murray Callan (Liberty A). We had an extra book, so we gave that to Landon Eversgerd of Belmont A. (We’re glad we didn’t have another extra book, because Derek Works (Liberty A), Ryan Harkins (Liberty C), Josiah Lane (Liberty C), and Celia Mayfield (Belmont B) all finished tied for 12th.)

We played an all-star tossups-only individuals’ shootout among championship flight participants after the tournament; Alexander Wyrick took the early lead, but Soham Mehra buzzed himself back into a tie after 24 tossups and won the three-tossup tiebreak. Derek Works didn’t buzz much, but key powers without any negs were good enough to place him 3rd.

It was a small tournament, but good help was absolutely essential. In the absence of core reader (and assistant prize-wrangler) Dylan Cox due to illness, the East Tennessee State University quizbowl hive was represented with warmth and welcome by Caitlin Dotson and Sydney Vaughn. Jarrett Holmes was a late but willing add to the reader pool in support of Virginia Tech, and Ryan Fox (a Berry College alum, and it always brings me joy to see Doc Carper represented) read in support of Belmont. Liah Strouth was my right hand on the day, and I’m so grateful for all the support she’s provided for our game in this region this year.

It was a very affirming day. When all was done, the core theme was how much fun the tournament day was. One told me point-blank they’d quit playing quizbowl after their last tournament, because there wasn’t enjoyment there, and how this tournament provided that enjoyment. We need these reminders that, at the end of the day, as great a game as we find this, this is just a game and we need to treat it as such - and we need to give our players reasons to keep coming back and putting themselves to the test.

Thanks to everybody from UT, Belmont, Liberty and Virginia Tech for being with us.
