SUNSET (Open Summer Tournament, Online, 7/22)

Post by komododragon655 »

I am excited to announce SUNSET (the Summer UNiquely-fun Season Ender Tournament), an open high/middle school tournament on Saturday, July 22nd, 2023. We will run two divisions, one on IQBT #1, and one on MAKEMAKE for the tournament.

I, Andrew Gao will be directing this event.

All players in the class of 2023 or younger will be able to play. Teams need not consist of players from the same school, this is an open tournament.

Rules
Teams can have up to 6 players, though only 4 players may play at one time. Players are required to show TWO HANDS on camera if they don’t have an exemption from a TD. Edit: We will be using NAQT rules with slight modifications for timing (5/5/8), and other things.

Format
There are two divisions for the tournament, one on IQBT #1, and one on MAKEMAKE. The difficulty of the sets do not correspond to the strength of the divisions, the intent of the divisions is to allow the most number of people to play the tournament. We will cap each division at 16 teams and expand if there is demand/staff. Teams will be guaranteed 9 games. We will have 20 cycles of tossups and bonuses, powers (15 points), and negs (-5). There is no computational math. Games will be played on Discord, with Buzzin.live for buzzing.

Registration & Payment
The team formation sheet is located here. Please make sure you are registering for the right division. Each team will cost $70. Payment will be through Venmo, Paypal, or check. If payment is not sent by 3 days after the tournament, a $10 late fee will be applied.

The drop deadline for this tournament will be Thursday, 7/20, at 10 AM ET. Teams who cancel after this time will still be liable for the entire fee and the late fee, if applicable.

Please email me at [email protected] to confirm your registration.

Staffers will be paid $25 for staffing the whole tournament. Staffers must be ineligible to play BOTH divisions of the tournament. The staffer form is here.

Stats
Team and individual stats will be posted on hsquizbowl.com within 24 hours of the end of the tournament. We will have live stats up to the game on a Google Sheet, and category and subcategory stats.

Misconduct
Anyone involved with the tournament, including but not limited to: coaches, players, staff, tournament directors, and spectators must adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct. Misconduct can be reported to this form and/or sent to [email protected].

Contact
Please direct any questions to [email protected]. I hope you play SUNSET for a fun end to the quizbowl season!

The deadline for registering for this will be Thursday, 7/20 at 10:00 AM ET. If you have assembled a team, please make sure you put your team down on the sheet AND email me before this deadline. Rosters can be changed until the day of the tournament.

Since we are getting closer to the tournament date, I have decided to waive the requirement of staffers to have played/seen both sets. If you are still eligible, you are encouraged to play, though we are looking for a few more staffers to help the tournament run smoothly! Staffers may be paid $25 or receive community service hours -- please fill out the form here, thank you!

The registration/cancellation deadline is coming up tomorrow, Thursday @ 10 AM ET. We currently have a waitlist in both divisions, but we will expand by 2s. The deadline to switch divisions will also be Thursday @ 10 ET, though staff are welcome to sign up after Thursday at the form here.

This ran pretty smoothly today!

Stats from the tournament are located here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/8226/. Category stats for the MAKEMAKE division are located here. Category stats for the IQBT division will be posted soon.

In the IQBT division, One Chis Is All It Takes won against The fellowship in a one-game final agreed on by the teams. Kiruna Disciples took third in the first game of an advantaged third-place game against Sofia the Churke: Friendship is Magic, who finished fourth. Our top three scorers were Sinecio Morales (125.5 PPG), Sudhanva Belur (90.5 PPG), and Abhiraam Girish (80.5 PPG).

In the MAKEMAKE division, Arnie barnie won 415-390 in the first game of a one-game final against Team ROT Top Dogg. 2005 FY took third, and Plum Grove Junior High B took fourth by winning against domino's workers in a one-game fourth-place game. The top scorers here were Sky Hong (125.5 PPG), Dennis Yang (111.11 PPG), Henry Pan (105.5 PPG), and Dwight Solano-Wilson (100.5 PPG).

This tournament could not have been possible without all 34 teams, and all 22 (excellent!!) staffers: Aatreyo Bhattacharyya, Abigail AuYeung, Adithi Rallapalli, Arav Kaushik, Biyang Zhang, Christian Oh, Claire Chan, Colin McNamara, Gregory Zeldovich, Joel Miles, Joy An, Julien Diamond, Madhav Thakur, Monit Karmakar, Pranavkrishna Bharanidharan, Rohan Arni, Saketh Satti, Sophia Guo, Sophia Wu, Steven Yuan, Sushanth Balaraman. I would also like to thank Conor Thompson for helping resolve some protests, and for letting this use MAKEMAKE. Similarly, thanks to Fred Morlan and the IQBT crew for letting this mirror IQBT #1.
