I am pleased to announce that Maggie L Walker Governor’s School Quiz Bowl will be hosting the 26th iteration of the Governor’s School Academic Competition on March 16th, 2024. This tournament will be held in-person at MLWGS. The field cap is tentatively 16 teams. Teams can be six people maximum, with four playing at any given time. Each team is guaranteed at least 10 games. Please contact me with any questions at [email protected].
Location & Time
The tournament will be held at MLWGS, located at 1000 N Lombardy St, Richmond, VA. Please arrive between 8:30 and 9AM on the 16th. An opening captains and coaches meeting will be held at 9.
Questions
The question set used for this tournament will be written by current Maggie Walker students and alumni. The difficulty is regular high school, comparable to that of previous GSAC question sets, which are publicly available. Standard tossup/bonus format will be used. There will be 20 tossups in a round. Answering a tossup correctly grants the team who answered it the opportunity to answer 3 bonuses, each worth 10 points.
Affiliation
We are currently seeking certification from PACE; information about qualifications will be provided upon certification.
Registration
Please fill out this Google form to express your interest in attending: https://forms.gle/RcuUYmffnbGdjXyp7
There will be a $80 fee per team. A $10 discount will be provided for each buzzer system provided (assuming each buzzer system is functioning and meets the necessary criteria for use in this format). A $20 travel discount will be provided for any team traveling in excess of 150 miles determined by Google Maps using the schools as endpoints.
Everyone attending the tournament is expected to follow the PACE Code of Conduct.
We’re all very excited to be hosting GSAC again. Hope to see you there!

Looks like the interest form can "only be viewed by users in the owner's organization".

Tentative field as of 1/4/2024 (TEAMS/BUZZERS):
Huguenot: 2/0
LC Bird: 1/1
Robinson: 1/2
St. Anne's Belfield: 2/1
Freeman: 2/0
Norfolk Academic Guild: 2/0
Nansemond-Suffolk: 1-2/0
Cosby: 2/1
Midlothian: 6/1
Presently 19-20 teams have registered, slightly more than our initially stated field cap of 18. We will be expanding the field to 24 to accommodate this. We of course will continue to accept further registrations; in the case that these exceed 24, we will explore the option of enlarging the field further with regard to logistical feasibility and staff availability.

Updated field as of 2/25/24: (Teams/Buzzers)
LC Bird (1/2)
Robinson (1/2)
St Anne's Belfield (2/1)
Freeman (2/0)
Norfolk Academic Guild (2/0)
Nansemond-Suffolk (1-2/0)
Midlothian (6/1)
Northwood (1-2/1-2)
BASIS Independent McLean (2/0)
Trinity (1/0)
Lightridge (3/1)
Huguenot (3/0)
Aiken (1-2/2)
Hermitage (1/0)
Final count: 29-32 teams, 9 buzzer sets.
Given the truly incredible amount of interest in the tournament, we've been able to expand the field to 32! This is essentially the maximum we can handle given staffing, space concerns, and available buzzer sets, so further registrations will be put on a waitlist dependent on the teams which have already registered.
