[CANCELLED] Ithaca Spring Tournament VI - Ithaca High School, Ithaca, NY (5/18/24) [QUAOAR]

Post by mrkirkmath »

The Ithaca High School Quizbowl team, in partnership with the Central New York Quizbowl Alliance (CNYQuA), will be hosting their 6th Ithaca Fall Tournament on Saturday, May 18, 2024. This tournament will be held at Ithaca High School in Ithaca, NY. We would expect all players to be present on site by 8:30 for a morning informational meeting, and we plan to start the first round no later than 9:00.

Set Used
We will be using QUAOAR, a question set specifically designed for high school teams and players that are new to quizbowl and/or have less experience with single-day, 20 tossup/bonus tournament formats. This question set will be easier than the one used at the 2023 Ithaca Fall Tournament, and will be comparable to the sets used at the 2023 Geneva Invitational and MasterMinds tournaments.

Eligibility
The goal of this tournament is to be an opportunity for teams and players to gain more experience in single-day, 20 tossup/bonus quizbowl formats, and so we are asking teams only to bring players who do not have as much experience with this style of play. We expect that teams will honor this objective, and so the only strict eligibility rule that we are enforcing is that no player may participate who either has competed or plans to compete this year in a national championship tournament. This includes, but is not limited to, NAQT's High School, Small School, Middle School, or Individual Player National Championship Tournaments; PACE's National Scholastic Championship tournament; and/or any of IAC's National History Bee or Bowl tournaments.

Registration
Please register by completing this Google form. On initial registration, please provide your school name, number of teams intended (this can be changed later), your name/contact information, the number of buzzer systems and staffers you are bringing (if any), and any other information we should know. After registering, you will be sent an invoice and a request for a team roster. Registration will close on Saturday, May 11

Fee Structure
The base price is $85 for the first team and $75 for each additional team. We are also offering the following discounts (applied to a school’s overall registration cost):
  • -$5 per functioning lock-out buzzer system provided by schools
  • -$10 per staffer provided by the school (staffers will be expected to bring a laptop computer for use during the tournament)
  • -$10 per 100-miles traveled to get to Ithaca High school (as determined by Google Maps)
  • -$15 for any new school/program (a school that has never played at either an Ithaca Fall or Spring event in the past)
The minimum fee per team is $50. Checks should be written to "Ithaca High School Brain Team" and can be turned in on May 18 or mailed ahead of time to:

On-site Contact Information
This tournament will be directed by former IHS Quizbowl Coach and CNYQuA founder Benjamin Kirk. He can be reached for questions at [email protected] or contacted by phone at (607) 329-6005.

Lunch
Lunch will be provided on-site. Details TBD. We do not recommend teams plan to leave campus for lunch, as there are no convenient options located near the school.

Misconduct Information
All players, spectators, and coaches must adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct. Players, spectators, and coaches should report misconduct either directly to staff or via the misconduct form found at the bottom of the PACE Code of Conduct. Every instance of misconduct will be dealt with seriously by tournament staff. Similarly, the staff will investigate every allegation of cheating and reserves the right to report confirmed cheaters to local and national Quizbowl organizations.

Tournament Format
Games will consist of 20 tossup/bonus pairs, read in untimed matches. During play, we use NAQT’s Standard Rules with the exception that we will use five-second timing: five seconds to buzz in after tossup completion, five seconds to start answer to tossup after buzz, five seconds to start answer to bonus after bonus completion. The exact bracketing format used will depend on the final number of registered teams, but we expect to run a quasi-seeded round robin format in the morning, followed by a rebracketing and another round robin after lunch, with a single final match to determine tournament champion if needed.

We have made the difficult decision to cancel this tournament due to low interest.
