Hi everyone! I am happy to announce that the University of Toronto Academic Trivia club will be hosting a mirror of the NAQT Collegiate Novice Tournament (CNS-231C) on Saturday, September 21st, 2024. This tournament will be hosted concurrently with McGill's mirror. I, Franklin Wu, will be the tournament director.
Logistics
The tournament will take place at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), 252 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON. The opening meeting will begin at 9:15 AM and rounds will begin promptly at 9:30 AM. Please plan to arrive early. Updated 09/06 to better reflect GO Transit schedules.
Fees and Registration
Our tentative field cap is 10 teams, with potential for more depending on staff and buzzer availability. We will use NAQT's registration system for this tournament. Please create an account and register your teams at https://www.naqt.com/go/register/16252. UPDATE: We have dropped our additional email requirement.
Tournament fees will be paid by e-transfer to uoftquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com and due by the start of the tournament.
The fee for this tournament will be $100 (CAD) per team, with the following discounts:
-$10/team for each moderator with a functioning laptop + charger
-$10/team for a functioning buzzer set
-$15/team if that school did not attend any tournaments in the 2023-24 school year
-$15/team for a shorthanded team (team consisting of 1 or 2 players)
The minimum fee for a team is $60.
The registration deadline and drop deadline is Wednesday, September 18 at 11:59 PM. Failure to register by the registration deadline may result in your registration being declined at our discretion; likewise, failure to drop by the drop deadline may result in you remaining liable for your team’s fee at our discretion.
Eligibility
This tournament is intended for novices currently enrolled in post-secondary institutions. As such, there will be strictly enforced eligibility requirements. Please note that high school players and coaches may not attend this tournament.
Any player who has never played quizbowl before (History Bowl, Consensus, and Reach for the Top do not count) is automatically eligible.
Players who have played quizbowl before are eligible if they satisfy all of the following conditions:
1) They have not scored over 25 PPG at a collegiate tournament (not including collegiate novice)
2) They have not scored over 30 PPG at a high school tournament or collegiate novice
3) They have not scored over 50 PPG at a high school novice tournament (including IS-A sets)
4) They have not played university quizbowl (i.e. attended any recognized tournaments) before September 2022
5) They have not previously qualified for or played at ICT or ACF Nationals
If you are not eligible per the above restrictions but believe that you should still be considered for eligibility, please contact me at franklin.wu.1231 [at] gmail [dot] com. If you believe a registered player is ineligible, please also contact me via email.
