Hey everyone,
Now that the class of 24 has graduated, the last vestiges of Socal traditions like forums posts (which were admittedly on their last legs) are starting to die off. This is a rough prediction of how I think the circuit will turn out. With the shift from such a senior-heavy season (and one dominated by particularly strong teams like CCA and Del Norte), this means there's room for lots of change and growth throughout it! I'm really excited to see how teams perform. These rankings are very much subject to change - and we'll see how accurate they are today at Bronco Bowl VI!
1) Santa Monica - Samo keeps most of their team for the year, with Naomi in particular returning as a lead scorer with the incredibly strong Govind and Eames behind her. Even though Del will be gone, Samo still retains much of its core and doesn't lose too much coverage wise (samo even seems to have their sci situation somewhat figured out)
2) Del Norte - this may be a very variable position, but Del Norte will be a pretty strong team. Jacob Wu will likely be captaining this team as an incredible player who put up strong performances at HSNCT while on a team with Jack and Conner, so he'll have even more space to do great without them. The freshmen who were on Del Norte B last year will also likely be pretty strong supports (Dylan was very good when I played him), and the 8th place MSNCT Oak Valley team all is entering Del Norte now for a possible Santhosh on Del Norte A
3) Canyon Crest Academy - here's where rankings are starting to get a bit murky. CCA should be placed higher here I think just because Claire is a very strong and consistent player (furthered by there being no significantly op lit mains now so she's got a clean 4/4), and Shail, Lorenzo, and Ishank all put up very impressive performance at online tournaments and HSNCT (CCA B went 5-5 at HSNCT)
4) La Jolla - Not too much to say here, La Jolla is all returning. The team was strong last year, and I'm sure with time they'll be stronger this year, with more of their holes covered up. Sid is definitely a top 3 player in Socal this year. This may be interchangeable with CCA
5) Francis Parker - this team also returns, though I put them just below La Jolla due to La Jolla's great HSNCT finish, but these teams may be pretty close to each other. Francis Parker has also had a neg problem that will need to be curved
6) Olympian - Iris is probably one of if not the best fine arts mains this season (assumedly improved over the summer) + great at rmpss, Dantae is incredibly skilled with hist and will be up there. I haven't really gotten a chance to see how good the rest of Olympian is, but I know Arjay is taking up science and there's another player taking up lit - hopefully a well rounded team can be put together here
7) Westview - Anvit Watwani is the only returning player for Westview, but is a pretty darn good player as I've seen practicing with him, and has good knowledge throughout all categories. He's got some solid support, and a cohort of incredibly skilled new freshmen including Mihir Konkapaka who will definitely be making waves in the Competitive div this year
8) Rancho Bernardo - Yatish grindset???? (this is just a general circuit placement, not specific to BB)
9) Del Norte B? there are more strong players than just 1 teams worth
10) Arcadia? There are some solid players there but I don't know too much about them other than how Swarit's performed

Rahul,
Any idea of Middle School Competitions? We just participated in Bronco Bowl on Saturday as a JV team and won all rounds. However while this gives us exposure to tournaments, we do not qualify for NAQT Nationals. Do you folks have any tournament schedules available? Is there a possibility for Middle School tournaments, given that BHMS has also started a team?

Hi,
Since I'm going to college this year, I won't be as involved with circuit scheduling for things like middle school tournaments - that being said, I believe Del Norte has expressed interest about hosting a middle school tournament, and is in the middle of working out details! You can email them here: dnquizbowl at gmail dot com. Hopefully we can continue growing the Socal middle school circuit back to how large it was pre-pandemic!
