CNY Spring Championship - Geneva High School, Geneva, NY (3/29/25) [CALISTO III]

Post by mrkirkmath »

The Central New York Quizbowl Alliance (CNYQuA) will be hosting its Central NY Spring Championship tournament on Saturday, March 29, 2025. This tournament will be held at Geneva High School in Geneva, NY. We would expect all players to be present on site by 8:30 for a morning informational meeting, and we plan to start the first round no later than 9:00.

Set Used
We will be using CALISTO III, a question set developed by a community of quizbowl players. This set will be slightly more challenging than the standard NAQT sets used at other CNYQuA tournaments. Interested teams are encouraged to check out the archived version of last year’s CALISTO set for examples.

Registration
Please register by completing this Google form. On initial registration, please provide your school name, number of teams intended (this can be changed later), your name/contact information, the number of buzzer systems and staffers you are bringing (if any), and any other information we should know. After registering, you will be sent an invoice and a request for a team roster. Registration will close on Saturday, March 22

Fee Structure
The base price is $85 for the first team and $75 for each additional team. We are also offering the following discounts (applied to a school’s overall registration cost):
  • -$5 per functioning lock-out buzzer system provided by schools
  • -$10 per staffer provided by the school (staffers will be expected to bring a laptop computer for use during the tournament)
  • -$10 per 100-miles traveled to get to Geneva High school (as determined by Google Maps)
  • -$15 for any new school/program (a school that has never played at a past CNYQuA-affiliated tournament at Bishop Ludden, Geneva, or Ithaca High Schools)
The minimum fee per team is $50. Checks should be written to "Geneva High School Quizbowl Team" and can be turned in on March 29 or mailed ahead of time to:
Geneva HS Quizbowl Team
℅ Victoria Lehman
101 Carter Rd
Geneva, NY 14456

On-site Contact Information
This tournament will be directed by CNYQuA founder Ben Kirk. He can be reached for questions at [email protected].

Lunch
Lunch will be provided on-site and will include a variety of homemade options, including vegan options. Teams will also be able to order pizzas for delivery to Geneva HS. More details will be provided to registered teams. We do not recommend teams plan to leave campus for lunch, as there are not convenient options located near the school.

Misconduct Information
All players, spectators, and coaches must adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct. Players, spectators, and coaches should report misconduct either directly to staff or via the misconduct form found at the bottom of the PACE Code of Conduct. Every instance of misconduct will be dealt with seriously by tournament staff. Similarly, the staff will investigate every allegation of cheating and reserves the right to report confirmed cheaters to local and national Quizbowl organizations.

Tournament Format
Games will consist of 20 tossup/bonus pairs, read in untimed matches. During play, we use NAQT’s Standard Rules with the exception that we will use five-second timing: five seconds to buzz in after tossup completion, five seconds to start answer to tossup after buzz, five seconds to start answer to bonus after bonus completion. The exact bracketing format used will depend on the final number of registered teams, but we expect to run a quasi-seeded round robin format in the morning, followed by a rebracketing and another round robin after lunch, with a single final match to determine tournament champion if needed.
