Robert Schumann Bicentennial Tournament - 3/27 @ UMN

Post by Gautam »

Hello all,

This is a preliminary announcement for the University of Minnesota's spring quizbowl tournament, the Robert Schumann Bicentennial Tournament which will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010. The tournament will be held in Blegen Hall on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus. This is the same location where GINVIT occurred.

The main purpose of this event is to offer teams a chance to warm up prior to the NAQT States and HSNCT events. We will be using a question set provided by HSAPQ, because very few Minnesota teams have had the chance to play HSAPQ sets this year. According to Shawn Pickrell, we will be using Question Set 10.

We plan on capping the field at 16 teams, so if you would like your team to play, we encourage you to register as quickly as possible.

Base fee: $70 per team
Working buzzer discount: -$10 per working buzzer system (no limit to the number of buzzers you can bring; only applicable to quizbowl buzzers and not knowledge bowl strips)
Qualified moderator discount: -$10 per qualified moderator provided (please email us at [email protected] by Dec. 1, 2009 if you want to avail this discount)
New to University of Minnesota discount*: -$10 (If your school hasn't played a tournament hosted by the Quizbowl at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, you get a $10 discount; this discount is only applicable once per school.)

To register for the tournament, please contact me at [email protected]. In your email, please let me know how many teams and buzzers you plan on bringing. Please feel free to email me if you have any other questions as well, (eg. suggestions for food, tournament logistics, etc.)

For information about parking, please consult the handy-dandy Minneapolis Campus Interactive Map provided by the UMN Parking and Transportation Services. The 19th Avenue Ramp and the 21st Avenue Ramp on the West Bank are the closest locations.

This thread will be periodically updated with pertinent information.

Thank you,

Is there the possibility of having this event/some other event attached to this be connected to assembling a team for NASAT?

This happens during our Spring Break, but I'd still like to play it, so would it be cool if I registered a team and brought people from STA?

Bumping to check if there is
a. any additional interest in this tournament
b. any interest in some sort of NASAT qualifying activity associated with it

I don't know if our coach has already registered us, but EP will send definitely one, probably two teams to this. I can give a definite answer by next week.

Gaurav

EDIT: I would be interested in a NASAT-related activity, and I am sure other EP people would be too.

I'm surprised none of the other teams in the state that have attended non-NAQT tournaments in the pass, like SPC and Chaska, for example, have shown interest.

Chanhassen and Chaska have spring break during this meet which is the reason we are not attending

With the small number of teams attending, I'm not sure if it's worthwhile, but if people are interested, what do you think would be a good NASAT activity?

Heh. Central should be there with a team, though we'll be missing some people. It'll be more than just myself though.

So far we have interest from:

1 GSFHSA team, 1 buzzer
1 STA team, 1 buzzer
2 EP teams
1-2 Mpls South team
1-2 Minnetonka teams, 3 buzzers
1 St. Paul Central team, 1 buzzer

for a total of 7-9 teams. I'm expecting Mtka and South to confirm by tomorrow as to whether or not they will have 1 or 2 teams.

Hello,

This tournament happened, with 8 teams in attendance. Eden Prairie A beat out StAlex in the final to win this tournament with a 11-0 record.

Unfortunately, I do not have the stats for the playoffs on this computer, but I will be able to upload them within 24 hours from now. In the meanwhile, here is the link to the prelim stats.

I'd like to thank all teams for attending this tournament; I must say that each team in attendance put up a strong performance, and there were many close games that I would have loved to watch. I want to thank Mike Cheyne, Eliza Grames, Andrew Hart, Matt Hart, and Michael Van de Weghe for moderating at today's tournament. Of course, I'd be remiss if I forgot to thank St. Thomas for agreeing to split up their team at the last minute so that we could have an even number of teams for the round robin.

Thank you,
Gautam

A 20 to 2 power to neg ratio for Tony on EP, and more than 25ppb? Wow. This is a pretty great team!
