Reinstein Varsity using PLAYTIME & 234A IL 12/14
The 2024 Reinstein Varsity Tournament will take place on December 14 at Barrington High School in Chicagoland. We will have an Über-Competitive Division and a Standard Division. The PLAYTIME Set will be used in the Über-Competitive Division, and NAQT IS-234A will be used in the Standard Division.
To register for the tournament, use the NAQT website. If you have any questions, IM me or email me at [email protected]. Team names must be the name of the high school that the students attend. Checks should be made out to Reinstein QuizBowl and sent to Reinstein QuizBowl; PO Box 57; 125 Schelter Road; Lincolnshire, IL 60069.
Because the two divisions are using different questions, and the Über-Competitive Division questions are very difficult for high school students, we are allowing all teams to register for the division of their choice. This means that there may be some very strong teams in the Standard Division. The tournament format will be determined based on the number of entries for each division.
This competition will follow NAQT untimed rules, with each match lasting 20/20.
The cost is $130 per team, which covers lunch for the students and coach. There is not a buzzer discount, but we expect teams to bring buzzers unless they have a good reason not to. Teams traveling long distances or who are in financial hardship can request a discount.
FAQ
Q: Do you need staff?
A: Yes, but we only need them if they have a laptop or tablet with functioning wifi.

Re: Reinstein Varsity using PLAYTIME & 234A IL 12/14
Here is a list of the first ten teams to sign up for the Über-Competitive Division:
Adlai E. Stevenson
Detroit Catholic Central
HSMSE at CCNY
Innovation Academy A
Innovation Academy B
Lambert
Mexico
Naperville North
Rockford Auburn
Utica Academy
We had 24 teams last year in the Über-Competitive Division. It looks like it's going to be a strong field.

Due to limits on moderators and space, the total field size for both divisions is capped at 64. It is now at 61. We still need a lot of moderators.

The Uber-Competitive Division is now limited to 24 teams, so there are two spots available.
There are currently 30 staffers listed above. If that number hits 38, I will start expanding the Standard field.

Re: Reinstein Varsity using PLAYTIME & 234A IL 12/14
The tournament is now full with one team on the waitlist.
The tournament will hopefully run with 24 teams in Über-Competitive and 48 teams in Standard.
A card system will be used in Über-Competitive.
Rounds 2 and 3: Every team plays an opponent with a matching record.
Round 4: Every team plays an opponent with the opposite record.
Round 5: Every team plays an opponent with the same Round 4 result.
Round 6: Every team plays an opponent with the same combined Rounds 4 and 5 results.
Teams will be seeded after Round 6 based on record and then PPB. At that point the tournament will be split into the top 8, middle 8, and bottom 8. Any team that finishes 6-0 or 5-1 will be guaranteed a spot in the top 8, and 4-2 teams will get in based on PPB compared to other 4-2 teams.
Each group of 8 will play 3 rounds of power matching.
Final team ranking will be based on:
1) Which group of 8 the team is in
2) Record for the day
3) If there is a tie for best record of the day and the match in the top room ends before 4:30, there will be a one game playoff between the top two teams based on record for the day, then record for the last three matches, then PPB for the day. The top room is the one with the match between to the two top 8 teams
4) Record for the last three matches
5) PPB for the day
Note that there is no chance of an advantaged final, and there is no requirement to clear the field by two matches.
The Standard Division will be divided into 8 pools of 6 teams each. The pool winners and 4 wildcards based on record and then PPB will be in parallel pools of 6. There will be a championship match and 3rd place match when those pools are done. For all pool results, placement will be based on record within the pool, then PPG. There will also be afternoon pools for 13-18, 19-24, etc. Placement into the afternoon pools will be based on record and then PPB. There will not be any tiebreaker matches.

Re: Reinstein Varsity using PLAYTIME & 234A IL 12/14
A huge thanks to everybody who helped out yesterday. Special praise to Jeff Price for providing the facilities, serving lunch to over 400 people, and putting out fires all day. Special praise also goes to Jonah Greenthal for compiling Standard stats and Sinecio Morales for compiling Über-Competitive stats. Thanks also to Mike Laudermith for providing the individual book prizes.
Speaking of stats, here they are. The two champions were Fremd and Evanston, and there was a lot of great quizbowl played by a lot of teams throughout the day. Fremd, Stevenson B, Mexico, Innovation A, and Lambert topped 15 PPB on a college set. Evanston, Northside, Springfield, Loyola, Centennial, Northridge, Latin, Glenbrook South B, Homewood-Flossmoor, New Trier, and Francis Parker B topped 20 PPB in the Standard division.
A huge thanks to the moderators: Jason Briski, Colby Burnett, Ulysses Capistran, Andrew Cheun, Peter Cipriano, Ben Dillon, Brad Fischer, Ryan Fox, Rohan Ganeshan, Terry Gatchell, Chris Gismondi, Kaushik Gollamudi, Shao Guo, Noah Hartman, Grant Koh, Denise Kreb, Joe Kulesza, Mike Laudermith, Alan McCloud, Dylan Minarik, Andrew Nadig, Mike Oliver, Shrey Parikh, Aakash Patel, Syed Quadri, Tejas Raje, Dillon Robertson, BJ Ryan, Michael Sacks, Kristin Strey, Koby Theobald, Jonathan Ting, Puneet Virdi, Stephen Walsh, Andrew Wang, and Matthew Welmers. They moderated a combined 350 matches, and they did it with quality and professionalism.
