Georgetown Spring Tournament (IS-238A) -- April 12, 2025

Post by chartong »

Hello everyone,

I am pleased to announce that Georgetown University will be hosting its first ever Spring Tournament on Saturday, April 12th, 2025. Matt Shinnick will be serving as tournament director.

Location and Schedule
The tournament will be hosted at Georgetown University (3700 O St. NW, Washington DC) in the Walsh Building. A campus map can be found here. Check-in will begin at 8:20 EST, and a brief opening meeting will be held at 8:45 so that rounds may begin promptly at 9:00 AM.

Question Set
We will be using NAQT's IS-238A set for this tournament. This is an introductory level set that is suitable for teams of all levels (a sample packet can be found here.)

Eligibility and Registration
This tournament is open to closed middle and high school teams (meaning that players on the same team must attend the same institution). Registration will be handled through NAQT. Please register using this link. Registration will close on April 9th.

Format
The field will be tentatively capped at 20 teams (subject to change depending on moderator availability).

Gameplay will consist of two 10 cycle halves (one cycle = a tossup followed by a three-part bonus) for a total of 20 cycles. We will be using 15 point powers and -5 point negs for incorrect answers. Computational math questions will be skipped. Only four players may be subbed into a game at a time, but teams may have up to 6 players on their roster.

Fees, Discounts and Payment
- $90 for the first team, $80 for the second team, $70 for the third team and so on. There is a minimum fee of $50.
- Teams that are "new to quiz bowl" (i.e. did not participate in pyramidal quiz bowl in the 2024-2025 season) will pay a flat fee of $50.
The discounts offered are as follows:
- -$10 per working buzzer set
- -$15 for each experienced moderator with their own laptop.

Payment
Payment can be made by Zelle, Venmo, check or cash (upon tournament check-in). Please try to have payment ready by the day of the tournament. Checks should be addressed to Georgetown Quiz Bowl.

Conduct
Anyone associated with the tournament (including but not limited to players, chaperones, staffers and spectators) are expected to follow the PACE Code of Conduct. Misconduct can be reported using this form.

Field
The field can be found on the NAQT tournament page; the link is here.

If you have any additional questions or comments, you can contact us at quizbowl AT georgetown DOT edu, or the TD at mbs153 AT georgetown DOT edu. We hope to see you in DC!

Ezra --

thanks for letting me know. I've updated the link so it should work now.

Teams, please note -- I have updated the "payment" section of the original post. If paying by check, please make checks out to Georgetown Quiz Bowl.

We have reached our tentative field cap of 20 teams, so all further registrations will go to the waitlist. As of writing, it doesn't appear as if we will be able to expand the field any further without more buzzers -- as a reminder, there is a -$10 discount for each buzzer set supplied (up to the minimum fee of $50).
