Where are you going next year? (collegiate, 2024)
If you're a member of the collegiate quizbowl community, post here about what your plans are for the next year: if you're graduating, starting school, moving somewhere new, and so on. Please only post here if you have something definite.

Re: Where are you going next year? (collegiate, 2024)
This summer, I will be moving to Houghton, Michigan to join the faculty of Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech).
I don't expect to be active in quizbowl (especially not pre-tenure), but I would like to be in touch with Michigan Tech's quizbowl club every now and then.
That being said, I didn't expect to be very active in collegiate quizbowl either, especially not in grad school. But every time I tried to step away from the game to focus on my career, I found myself drawn to the community, relearning why I fell in love with and joined quizbowl in the first place. I consider myself very privileged for having the opportunity to play quizbowl for over half my life. So I would like to thank everybody in the quizbowl community for making the game great.
I was considering making a Jordan Palmer-esque retirement post, but I don't have enough hot takes. But if I had one minor inconsequential hill to die on, it's that we should bring back the post-game handshake line.

Re: Where are you going next year? (collegiate, 2024)
At this point I've been back for a couple of months, but for anyone that I haven't spoken with recently, I finished my PhD program at UT in December and I moved back to Durham at the start of the year for a postdoc at Duke. I hope to help staff and participate in open events in the area as time allows.

I'll be briefly returning to UC Berkeley, and am looking forward to playing some non-online quizbowl.

I will be heading to the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics at Martin Luther University in Halle to do my doctorate for the next 4-4.5 years. I assume this marks the end of my closed collegiate career, but if anyone needs a science player at an online open or COOT I would amenable.

I'll be starting a PhD in Physics at the University of Maryland! I don't plan on playing much, but I'd be happy to staff events as I have time for them.

I will be pursuing a PhD in computational biology and medicine at the Tri-Institutional PhD Program (Weill Cornell, The Rockefeller University, and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) in New York City. I don't plan on playing (nor am I sure how that would work logistically if I wanted to), but I'm happy to staff quiz bowl tournaments in the NYC area.

I'll be moving back to my hometown of the Bay Area for work. Despite my best efforts, I'll probably show up to an open and/or staff a tournament in the area sometime.

I will be staying at WashU for neurology residency. I don't expect to really have time, but if it works out I'd love to continue to staff, play opens, and freelance.

I'll be moving to the Bay Area for a research assistant job at Stanford starting around July. I'd be interested in staffing tournaments (college or high school) and playing open tournaments; I'm also planning to take a few classes at Stanford while working there, so I'll technically have NAQT (but probably not ACF) eligibility there but at this point I'm not planning to use it.

I will in fact also be attending the University of Maryland starting this fall! I will be staying in the state of Maryland to attend medical school while concurrently pursuing a masters degree in bioengineering. I'm currently not completely sure about my level of involvement in quizbowl as I took an entire year off at JHU to focus on my med school apps and I'm very washed now, but I may be able to play a few tournaments and help out with hosting/staffing during my preclinical and grad school years.Jason Puncheon wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 5:17 pmyour honor... a second terrapin has hit the "where are you going next year?" thread!
Since the med school is technically a separate university campus from the other grad programs, I'm not sure how eligibility would work, but since they're part of the same university system I would assume I would still be eligible. At the very least I would be able to play during the year that I do the masters program

I'm happy to announce that I will be moving to Hsinchu, Taiwan (台灣新竹) this summer to start a Masters Degree programme in Austronesian and Indigenous Studies at National Tsing Hua University's Institute of Anthropology. I do not anticipate returning to the United States for a number of years. I will not be playing quizbowl though I'm happy to do proofreading type stuff on a freelance basis should it be needed.

This would suggest that students at the University of Maryland School of Medicine would be eligible to play for Maryland, and in fact Dan Suzman played ACF Nationals for Maryland in 2008 as a medical student. NAQT's eligibility rules are not as clearly defined, but this would presumably hold there as well.Students at comprehensive universities within a state university system may no longer join the clubs of other schools in the same system. Any school which offers a full course of undergraduate study must field its own team. Students at graduate-only campuses, such as medical schools not attached to a specific undergraduate schools, may still play for another school in the system with the approval of the ACF Eligibility Committee. The ACF Eligibility Committee must approve any instance in which such a student plays for another school in the relevant university system.

I'll be starting an MD at Mount Sinai in NYC. Not sure how much I'll have time to play, but I'll probably play some local closed and/or open regionals.
